King Moshoeshoe I (c. 1786 – March 11, 1870) was the visionary founder and first monarch of the Basotho nation, now known as Lesotho. He is widely celebrated for his extraordinary diplomacy, wisdom, and military strategy in preserving his people's independence during a period of intense regional conflict.

Born as Lepoqo, he was the son of a minor chief. He earned the name "Moshoeshoe" (the "shaver") after a successful cattle raid, likening his prowess to a razor shaving a beard.
Thaba Bosiu: In 1824, he moved his people to this impregnable mountain stronghold. Its name means "Mountain at Night," as legend says it grew larger after dark to protect those atop it.Rather than relying solely on force, Moshoeshoe used strategic alliances and generosity toward enemies to build his nation.

Moshoeshoe's Day: A national holiday observed on March 11 to commemorate his death and honor his role as the "Father of the Nation".
Shweshwe Fabric: This iconic South

African-made fabric is named in his honor after he popularized a gifted piece of the cloth throughout his realm.
The current monarch, King Letsie III, is a direct descendant.
