The Life of Jesus Christ

Lesson 1: The Birth of Jesus Christ

Scripture: Luke 1:5–2:20; Matthew 1:18–25

God chose a humble young woman named Mary to become the mother of the Savior of the world. The angel Gabriel announced to her that she would conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit and give birth to a Son who would be called Jesus, because He would save His people from their sins.

Although Mary did not fully understand how these things would happen, she responded with great faith and humility, saying:

«“I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38)»

At that time, Joseph, who was engaged to Mary, was deeply troubled when he learned that she was expecting a child. But God sent an angel to him in a dream, assuring him that the child had been conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph obeyed God, took Mary as his wife, and faithfully cared for and protected her.

Later, a decree from Caesar Augustus required everyone to return to their ancestral hometown to be registered. This led Joseph and Mary to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem. The journey was long and difficult, especially because Mary was close to giving birth.

When they arrived in Bethlehem, they found that there was no room available for them. As a result, Jesus was born in humble surroundings and was laid in a manger.

That same night, angels appeared to shepherds who were watching over their flocks and proclaimed:

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10–11)

The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found the baby Jesus exactly as the angels had told them. They worshipped Him and then returned, glorifying and praising God for everything they had seen and heard.

What We Learn

- God fulfills His promises in His perfect time.
- He uses humble people to accomplish His eternal purpose.
- Jesus came into the world to bring salvation, hope, and eternal life.
- Like Mary and Joseph, we are called to respond to God with faith, humility, and obedience.

Today's Key Verse

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.” — Luke 2:11

The Life of Jesus Christ

Introduction

We begin this series with the purpose of learning about and reflecting on the life of our Lord Jesus Christ—the Man who changed the course of history and the lives of countless people through His love, His obedience to God, and His sacrifice on the cross.

Jesus was not merely a good man; He is the Son of God who came to bring redemption, hope, and eternal life to all who believe in Him.

Our prayer is that, as we study His life day by day, we will not only gain knowledge but also grow in faith, love, and obedience to God. May these messages draw us closer to the Lord Jesus and inspire us to follow Him with all our hearts.

"Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." — Matthew 11:29

"We Are Clay in the Hands of the Potter"

Key Passage:
Romans 9:20–21

Today we read a challenging chapter in Romans 9, where the Apostle Paul addresses questions that many people have asked throughout history.

Why are some people born blind, deaf, or unable to speak? Why are some rich while others are poor? Why do some seem to have greater opportunities than others? Why does God call some people to serve Him while others have not yet been called?

At times, we may wonder whether this is fair. We may even question God's justice.

But Paul reminds us with these words:

“But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?”
(Romans 9:20–21)

God is the Creator of heaven and earth. He made everything that exists and sustains all life by His power. Therefore, He has the right to do as He pleases with His creation.

We are like clay in the hands of the Potter. Every one of us has been formed by God, and our lives are in His hands.

Instead of questioning His wisdom, we should live with thankful hearts. We should thank Him for the gift of life, for good health, for eyes that can see, ears that can hear, and hearts that are able to receive His Word.

Like clay vessels, some are used in highly visible ways, while others serve in quiet and humble roles. Yet every vessel is made by the same Master Potter, and each has value in His sight.

Today, thank God that He has called you to serve Him in the place He has chosen for you. Listen carefully to His Spirit, and be willing to follow His leading each day.

Main Message

We are all clay in the hands of God, our Master Potter. He knows the purpose He has for each of our lives, and He never makes mistakes. Let us trust His wisdom, accept His calling with grateful hearts, and faithfully serve Him wherever He places us, knowing that He is working all things according to His perfect plan.

"I Know That Nothing Good Lives in Me"

Key Passage:
Romans 7:18–19

“For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.”
(Romans 7:18–19)

Today we read the honest words of the Apostle Paul as he describes the daily struggle every believer faces—the battle against our sinful nature.

Of all the challenges we face in life, none is greater than overcoming sin. People often try to deal with this struggle in different ways.

The first approach is to ignore our sinful nature, hoping that one day it will simply disappear. Unfortunately, this never works. Sin does not fade away on its own—it grows stronger when left unchecked.

The second approach is to rely only on our own willpower. While determination is important, it is not enough. Even Paul admitted this when he said:

“I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.”

The third—and only effective—way is to live by the Spirit of God.

That is why Paul continues in the next chapter by saying:

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life has set me free from the law of sin and death.”
(Romans 8:1–2)

He also reminds us:

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness.”
(Romans 8:26)

Therefore, we should not ignore our weaknesses or depend only on our own strength. Instead, we should come to God every day, asking Him for wisdom, guidance, and strength. As we allow His Spirit to lead us, He helps us overcome sin and grow in faith.

Although the battle against sin is difficult, we do not fight it alone. God is with us, and His Spirit strengthens us each day to live a life that pleases Him.

Main Message

We cannot overcome our sinful nature by our own strength alone. True victory comes when we trust in Jesus Christ, walk by the Spirit of God, and depend on Him every day. Let us never give up the fight against sin, but continually seek God's help, knowing that He gives us the strength to overcome and to live faithfully for His glory.

"All Have Sinned"

Key Passage:
Romans 3:23–24

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
(Romans 3:23–24)

These words should fill our hearts with deep gratitude. They remind us that none of us stands before God because we are good enough. Every one of us has sinned. We have all failed. Through our thoughts, words, and actions, we have fallen short of God's perfect standard.

If we had to pay the penalty for our own sins, none of us could do it. The debt of sin is far too great for any human being to repay.

Jesus illustrated this truth in the parable of the unforgiving servant. The servant owed an enormous debt that he could never repay, yet his master freely forgave him. In the same way, our debt before God is impossible for us to pay. But because of His great love, God has completely forgiven us through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ.

What we could never earn through our own efforts, God gives to us freely by His grace.

When we believe in Jesus Christ, are baptized into His Name, and seek to follow Him faithfully each day, our sins are washed away. God no longer sees us as guilty sinners burdened by an impossible debt. Instead, He sees men and women clothed in His mercy, justified through Jesus Christ, and given the hope of eternal life in His Kingdom.

Such amazing love should transform the way we live. Hearts that have been forgiven should become hearts that forgive others. Those who have received mercy should gladly show mercy. Those who have experienced God's love should reflect that love to everyone around them.

Today, let us thank our heavenly Father for His wonderful and undeserved grace. May His kindness be seen in our lives through compassion, patience, love, and forgiveness toward others.

Main Message

No one can be made right with God by their own goodness, because all have sinned. But through God's grace and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we receive forgiveness, redemption, and the hope of eternal life. Let us live each day with grateful hearts, showing love, mercy, and forgiveness to others, just as God has shown His grace to us through Christ.

The Truth Is: Jesus Has Risen!

Key Passage:
Matthew 28

Today we read about one of the greatest events in human history—the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

If anyone had ever been able to produce the body or the remains of Jesus, the resurrection would have been proven false. But no one has ever produced His body or any evidence of His remains.

The truth is that the soldiers guarding Jesus' tomb witnessed what happened with their own eyes. The Bible tells us:

"There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it."
(Matthew 28:2)

The angel's appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were as white as snow. The guards were so terrified that they shook with fear and became like dead men.

Later, the soldiers went into the city and reported everything they had seen to the chief priests. Instead of accepting the truth, the chief priests and the elders made a plan to hide it. They gave the soldiers a large sum of money and instructed them to say:

"His disciples came during the night and stole His body while we were asleep."
(Matthew 28:11–15)

The soldiers accepted the money and spread the false story.

But the truth remains unchanged. No one has ever been able to produce the body of Jesus because He truly rose from the dead. He is the only person who has been raised to immortality, ascended into heaven, and been given all authority in heaven and on earth.

Jesus declared:

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me."
(Matthew 28:18)

Because Jesus lives, we have the sure hope that those who faithfully belong to Him will also receive eternal life.

The Bible also says:

"For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead."
(Acts 17:31)

Main Message

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of our faith and a historical reality. No one has ever disproved it because Jesus is alive. His resurrection gives us hope, assurance, and the promise of eternal life. Let us hold firmly to this truth, remain faithful to Him, and joyfully await the day when He returns as King.

My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?

Key Verse:
Matthew 27:45–46

Today we read about the most significant moment in human history—the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. From noon until three o'clock in the afternoon, darkness covered the whole land. At about three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice:

“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”
“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
(Matthew 27:45–46)

These words were not spoken unexpectedly. They were prophesied by King David nearly 1,000 years before Jesus was born. In Psalm 22, David wrote:

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

He continued:

“I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. All who see Me mock Me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: ‘He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue Him. Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him.’”
(Psalm 22:1, 6–8)

The Hebrew word translated "worm" is towla. This same word is also associated with the scarlet dye used in the furnishings of the Tabernacle.

The towla worm provides a remarkable picture of Christ's sacrifice. When the female towla worm is ready to give birth, she attaches herself permanently to the trunk of a tree. She remains there until she dies, protecting her young beneath her body. As she dies, a crimson-red fluid stains both her body and the wood. From these worms, the scarlet dye of ancient times was produced.

What a beautiful picture of Jesus! He willingly gave His life on the tree (the cross), shedding His precious blood so that He might "bring many sons to glory" (Hebrews 2:10).

Each Sunday, many believers remember Jesus by sharing the bread and the wine together as brothers and sisters in Christ. As we do, we give thanks that Jesus died for us. His blood was shed to cleanse us from our sins so that we might live for Him, through Him, and with Him forever.

Main Message

Jesus willingly gave His life because of His great love for us. Just as the towla worm dies to give life to its young, Jesus gave His life on the cross so that we could receive forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life. May we never forget His sacrifice, but live each day with grateful hearts, faithful obedience, and joyful hope as we await His return.

Two Men. Two Failures. Two Different Responses.

Key Passage:
Matthew 26

Today we read about two men who were very close to Jesus—Judas and Peter. Both failed Him, but the way they responded to their failure was completely different.

Jesus said to Judas:

“Truly I tell you, one of you will betray Me.”
(Matthew 26:21)
And He said to Peter:
“Truly I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
(Matthew 26:34)
Both men failed to remain faithful to Jesus. They heard the same teachings, witnessed the same miracles, and shared the same table with their Lord. Yet when the moment of testing came, each chose a different path.

Judas deliberately betrayed Jesus. He chose money over love and exchanged his friendship with the Lord for personal gain. When he realised the weight of his sin, he lost all hope. He believed there was no way back to God. His sorrow turned into despair because he could no longer see the mercy that was still available to him.

Peter, on the other hand, denied Jesus out of fear and confusion. But when the rooster crowed and Jesus looked at him, his heart was broken. He wept bitterly—not because he had been caught, but because he had hurt the One who loved him so deeply. His tears became the beginning of repentance and restoration. After His resurrection, Jesus welcomed Peter back, forgave him, and entrusted him with the responsibility of caring for His flock.

The difference was not that one had sinned more than the other. The difference was where they turned after they had fallen.

We all stumble. We all make mistakes we wish we could erase. Yet Jesus continues to invite broken hearts to come back to Him. His grace is greater than our greatest failures, and His mercy never runs out.

If your heart is heavy with regret today, do not run away from Jesus—run to Him. In His loving embrace, repentance becomes hope, forgiveness brings peace, and broken lives are made whole again.

Main Message

Failure is not the end if we turn back to Jesus with genuine repentance. His grace is greater than all our sins, and His mercy is always available. Let us never run away from the Lord when we fall, but run to Him, for in Him there is forgiveness, restoration, and the promise of a new beginning.
