Why is Liberia represented at the IAEA Conference in Vienna, Austria?

The Little That We’ve Gathered.

Liberia is represented at International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference in Vienna to advance peaceful nuclear applications, strengthen technical cooperation, and develop national regulatory frameworks for health, agriculture, and environmental protection.

Established in 1957, the IAEA is an intergovernmental organization within the United Nations system that serves as the global center for cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The Agency works with its member states and partners to promote the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technologies for the benefit of humanity.

Why Liberia is Represented
1. Sustainable Development: Liberia aims to harness nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes, specifically targeting food security, healthcare, energy, and climate resilience.
2. Legal and Regulatory Frameworks: Representatives engage with the IAEA Office of Legal Affairs to draft Liberia's first Nuclear Law, ensuring proper standards for nuclear safety and security.
3. Partnerships and Resilience: Delegations—including high-level officials and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)—collaborate with marine and agricultural laboratories to monitor pollution and boost environmental resilience.
4. Strategic Frameworks: Participation helps implement multi-year technical cooperation agreements, such as the Country Programme Framework (CPF), guiding IAEA assistance.

Significance of the Representation
1. Global Alignment: High-level participation, including delegations led by top government officials, shows Liberia's commitment to responsible global nuclear non-proliferation and safety standards.
2. International Support Access: Active engagement positions the country to receive critical technical assistance, capacity-building resources, and funding for national development projects.
3. Institutional Capacity: It elevates local expertise by integrating Liberian agencies—like the EPA and Ministry of Agriculture—into worldwide scientific networks.
