Deputy Minister for Research, Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Curtis V. Dorley, is leading a high-level joint monitoring team in a nationwide assessment of the implementation, compliance, progress, and existing gaps within the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP) across six counties in Liberia.
The joint monitoring exercise brings together officials from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Liberia Women Empowerment Project under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, along with technical representatives from the Ministry of Gender.
Through the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), 227 women-led enterprises have already received grants and business support, directly benefiting 6,611 people, including 5,370 women. To date, more than US$708,967.50 has been disbursed to support women’s economic empowerment and livelihood initiatives in the six counties.
Additionally, 128 more women-led enterprises have signed agreements to receive an additional US$350,000 in grant support, which is expected to benefit 3,132 people, 86 percent of whom are women.
As part of the nationwide monitoring exercise, the team has already visited several project sites and communities, including Cestos City in Rivercess County, Zwedru in Grand Gedeh County, Robertsport in Grand Cape Mount County, Bopolu in Gbarpolu County, and Tubmanburg in Bomi County, engaging beneficiaries and local stakeholders to assess project implementation on the ground.
Speaking during the monitoring tour, Deputy Minister Dorley emphasized that the exercise is intended to ensure compliance and implementation standards, identify challenges, and strengthen accountability mechanisms to improve the delivery of services to women across Liberia.
The Liberia Women Empowerment Project is designed to empower approximately 36,000 Liberian women through programs aimed at improving their social and economic wellbeing.
The project places strong emphasis on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention, financial literacy and management training, leadership development, and economic empowerment initiatives targeting vulnerable women and women-led enterprises.
In addition to training and awareness programs, the project is also providing financial assistance and support to Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and women-owned small businesses to strengthen local enterprises, increase household income, and promote financial independence among women in both rural and urban communities.
Government officials say the initiative represents a major step toward advancing women’s empowerment, promoting economic inclusion, and supporting sustainable development across Liberia.
Officials believe the continued implementation and monitoring of the project will significantly improve the living conditions of women, strengthen local economies, and create sustainable opportunities for women entrepreneurs and community groups across Liberia.
