House Approves ArcelorMittal MDA Amendment, Sends Bill to Senate
The House of Representatives has passed the Third Amendment to the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) between Liberia and ArcelorMittal Liberia.
The legislation received 51 votes in favor, with no opposition and two abstentions, and has now been forwarded to the Senate for concurrence.
The amendment, discussed during a public hearing by a joint parliamentary committee, is aimed at enhancing government revenue, securing state ownership of rail and port assets, and introducing a multi-user rail system.
Lawmakers emphasized that the updated agreement strengthens local participation, ensures community benefits, and promotes environmental safeguards—positioning Liberia as an attractive destination for responsible investment in the mining sector

LEC Clarifies Cause of Recent Power Outages
The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has addressed recent blackouts affecting parts of the country, confirming that the disruptions were not
due to load shedding or electricity shortages.
LEC explained that technical trips along the Côte d’Ivoire–Liberia–Sierra Leone–Guinea (CLSG) regional transmission line triggered automatic shutdowns.
The corporation says its protection systems acted to safeguard critical infrastructure and prevent equipment damage.
Technical teams were deployed immediately, restoring power to affected areas.
LEC apologized for the inconvenience and reaffirmed its commitment to improving grid reliability and stable electricity delivery nationwide.

Tragic Well Accident Claims Three Lives in White Plains Township

Rural Montserrado is mourning the loss of three men who died while cleaning a well in Harts Town, Robertsville, White Plains Township.
Authorities have confirmed that the deaths were accidental, following an investigation and a fifteen-member jury ruling that ruled out any foul play.
The victims, George Askie, Prince Kudah, and Sumo Qoingewu, were reportedly contracted for the well cleaning task.
Eyewitnesses say the men operated a water pump in the well before entering, after which they failed to resurface.
Officials attribute the fatalities to a lack of ventilation in the well. Families of the deceased are now preparing for funeral arrangements
