Security concerns rise at the Kruka Town border in Lofa County as officers operate from makeshift structures, prompting urgent calls for government intervention amid growing Liberia–Guinea border tensions.

Authorities and residents in Lofa County are raising serious concerns over the poor conditions at the Kruka Town border crossing in Quardu Bondi Administrative District, calling on the Government of Liberia to urgently improve infrastructure and security presence at the strategic entry point.
The appeal comes amid heightened tensions along the Liberia–Guinea border, particularly following recent incidents reported in Solumba, which have increased fears about security vulnerabilities along the country’s northern frontier.
According to local authorities, the Kruka Town border crossing, an important gateway connecting Liberia and Guinea, currently lacks adequate facilities to support security officers assigned to monitor activities at the border.
Reports indicate that officers stationed at the crossing are operating from an improvised and incomplete structure provided by local residents, raising concerns about their safety and their ability to effectively carry out border control duties.
Observers say the current situation exposes security personnel to difficult working conditions and may weaken efforts to properly monitor cross-border movements.
Officials further confirmed that the border point is located less than a three-minute walk from Kruka Town, highlighting its importance for border security, trade, and movement between the two neighboring countries.
Community leaders say the existing structure is far below the standard required for such an important security post, particularly at a time when vigilance is needed due to ongoing tensions in nearby border communities.
Residents are therefore urging the Liberian government to prioritize the construction of a modern and secure border outpost at Kruka Town, while also strengthening border infrastructure throughout Lofa County.
They are also calling for increased support for security personnel through improved training, equipment, and welfare, noting that officers responsible for protecting the country’s borders must be adequately supported to perform their duties effectively.
Lofa County shares a long and porous border with Guinea, making it a critical area for monitoring cross-border movement, trade activities, and potential security threats.
Past incidents involving smuggling and unauthorized border crossings have underscored the need for stronger border enforcement and improved infrastructure along Liberia’s northern border.
Residents and local authorities say the situation at Kruka Town reflects broader challenges facing several border posts across the region, many of which reportedly lack the facilities necessary for effective security operations.
As concerns continue to grow, the community says it is awaiting the government’s response and hopes authorities will quickly assess the situation and take the necessary steps to upgrade the facility and support the officers stationed there.
Security analysts believe that strengthening infrastructure and operational capacity at key border points such as Kruka Town is essential to protecting national security, promoting safe cross-border trade, and maintaining stability in the region.

Lofa Teachers Await Government Response as Ultimatum Deadline Ends

Teachers across Lofa County say they are still awaiting an official response from the Government of Liberia as the two-week ultimatum issued to address their salary and benefit concerns expires today.
The educators had earlier warned that they would initiate a go-slow action if their grievances were not addressed by March 14. However, as the deadline passes, teachers say the planned action remains under consideration while they continue to monitor the government’s response.
Several teachers in the county have expressed frustration over delays in salary payments, claiming that since March they have not received their full salaries. They also raised concerns about the current salary payment structure, which allocates 30 percent in Liberian dollars and 70 percent in United States dollars.
According to some educators, they have only received the Liberian dollar portion of their salary, which they say is not enough to meet their daily needs.
Many teachers say the situation is putting significant pressure on their families, as they struggle to cover basic expenses such as food, clothing, transportation, and school fees for their children.
School administrators in the county have confirmed receiving numerous complaints from teachers regarding the salary delays. One senior administrator at a multilateral high school in Lofa County said the issue has been reported to the District Education Officer, County Education Officer, and the Human Resource Department, but no resolution has been reached so far.
Meanwhile, the Lofa County Focal Person of the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL), Sorsor T. Akoi, confirmed that teachers have formally submitted their concerns to his office.
Akoi explained that the association has engaged local education authorities in an effort to find a solution to the situation, but the matter remains unresolved.
He added that teachers across the county remain dissatisfied and may be forced to take further action if the government fails to address their concerns regarding unpaid salaries and benefits.
For now, the proposed go-slow action remains under review, as teachers continue to wait for a response from national authorities.
The situation underscores growing concerns within the education sector in Lofa County, where educators say timely and full payment of salaries is essential to sustaining their work and supporting their families.

Nearly a Year Without Clean Water — Kortee Town Residents Raise Alarm Over Growing Health Risks
By Johnson Flomo
Residents of Kortee Town in Voinjama District, Lofa County, are calling for urgent assistance as they continue to face a severe shortage of safe drinking water following the breakdown of the community’s only hand pump nearly a year ago.
According to local residents and community leaders, the prolonged lack of access to clean water has begun to pose serious health risks for families in the town. Reports from the community indicate that cases of diarrhoea and other water-related illnesses are increasing, particularly among children.
With the only hand pump in the community no longer functioning, residents say they have been forced to depend on nearby streams and other untreated water sources for drinking, cooking, and household use. Many fear that these water sources may be contaminated, exposing the community to further health complications.
“We have no choice but to use the stream water,” one resident explained. “Sometimes the water is not clean, but it is the only option we have for drinking and cooking.”
Community members say the broken hand pump once served the entire town and was the main source of safe drinking water. Since its breakdown, daily life has become increasingly difficult as residents travel long distances to fetch water that may not be safe for consumption.
The people of Kortee Town are now appealing to the Government of Liberia, humanitarian organizations, and development partners to urgently intervene by repairing or replacing the damaged hand pump.
Residents believe that restoring access to safe drinking water would significantly improve living conditions and help prevent the spread of waterborne diseases within the community.
The situation in Kortee Town reflects the broader challenges faced by many rural communities in Lofa County, where access to reliable and safe water sources remains limited.
As concerns continue to grow, residents are hopeful that authorities will respond quickly to their appeal before the health situation worsens.
