Former Burkina Faso transitional president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba has been arrested in Togo and expelled from the country, according to multiple news sources citing regional and Togolese security officials. Damiba was detained last week in Lome, where he had been living in exile since his 2022 ouster, and was subsequently taken to the airport; his current destination has not been officially confirmed.Damiba first came to power in January 2022 after overthrowing President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, but he was himself removed from office eight months later by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who now leads Burkina Faso’s military government. The Togolese authorities have reportedly acted amid mounting pressure from the Burkinabe junta, which accuses Damiba of involvement in multiple attempted coup plots and plans to destabilise the Sahel country.

Tensions in Uganda have escalated after the army chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also Museveni’s son, ordered opposition leader Bobi Wine to surrender within 48 hours. Muhoozi, who made the remarks on X, also claimed that security forces had killed several supporters of Bobi Wine’s NUP party. President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner of last week’s election with 71.6% of the vote, securing an eighth term, while Wine placed second with 24%. The results have been widely criticised by election observers and rights groups. Authorities have since intensified a crackdown, charging more than 100 opposition supporters with offences linked to election-related unrest. is reporting

Burkina Faso has released 11 Nigerian military officials and a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft after detaining them for more than a week following an emergency landing in the country. Nigeria’s foreign ministry said the crew were freed on Wednesday after a high-level delegation led by Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar held talks with Burkinabe authorities. The Alliance of Sahel States, which includes Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali, had accused Nigeria of violating Burkinabe airspace after the aircraft landed in the south-western city of Bobo-Dioulasso but Nigeria rejected the claim insisting that the landing was a precautionary safety measure carried out in line with international aviation protocols. The soldiers are due to arrive Nigeria today.
