🇱🇷 My Take
As a Liberian, I believe we need to have an honest conversation about the reported arrangement that could see deportees from the United States being sent to Liberia as a third country.

Let me be clear: this is not about hating foreigners or closing Liberia’s doors. Liberia has always welcomed people from different parts of the world, and many foreigners have lived, worked, invested, and built meaningful lives here.

But I also believe this particular situation deserves questions.

If someone is being removed from the United States because they can no longer legally remain there, why should Liberia become the destination if these individuals are not Liberian citizens? Why can't they be returned to their countries of origin? And most importantly, what exactly has Liberia agreed to, and what does Liberia receive or assume in return?

These are reasonable questions we need to ask, as citizens.

Sometimes it feels like the African continent is expected to accept arrangements that would probably receive much stronger resistance if the situation were reversed. Yes, many Liberians dream of traveling to America, Europe, and other parts of the world. But wanting to go somewhere for opportunities is completely different from having another country decide that Liberia should receive people it no longer wants within its borders.

Imagine a situation where someone else's child comes to your home, breaks your rules, and the parents decide they no longer want the child there. Wouldn't the first conversation naturally be with the child's own family? Why should another household suddenly become responsible for the situation?

That is the part I struggle to understand.

So, before we turn this into a political fight or start calling people racist for raising concerns, can we simply ask for transparency?

What are the exact terms of the arrangement?
How long would these individuals remain in Liberia?
Who would be responsible for them?
What security measures are in place?
And most importantly, was the Liberian people’s interest properly considered?

Liberia is a sovereign country. We can welcome people, but we also have the right to understand decisions that may affect our security, resources, communities, and national image.

Asking questions doesn't make us racist. It makes us citizens who care about what happens in our country.

We can be welcoming and still demand accountability.

We can value international friendship and still protect Liberia's national interest.

And we can pursue good relations with other countries without being afraid to ask: “What exactly are we agreeing to?” 🇱🇷
