Gaygay Calls on Liberians to Promote Peace, Unity and Reconciliation

Liberian businessman and humanitarian, Kollie Gaygay, has called on Liberians to continue promoting peace, unity, and reconciliation as the country strives for sustainable development and national progress.

Speaking in observance of Liberia’s National Unification Day, Gaygay stressed that Liberia stands a greater chance of developing and moving forward if its citizens unite as one people, regardless of tribe, religion, or political affiliation.

Delivering his Unification Day message, he urged Liberians not to allow their differences and diversity to divide them, but instead use them as a source of strength to promote national identity and collective development.

According to him, peace and stability remain key ingredients for economic growth, job creation, and national advancement.

“As a businessman, I strongly believe that peace and stability are essential for economic growth, job creation, and the overall progress of our nation,” Gaygay stated.

He cautioned citizens against violence, hatred, and division, while encouraging them to embrace dialogue, peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and cooperation in addressing national issues.

Gaygay further emphasized that the significance of National Unification Day should not be limited to its annual observance on May 14, but that its message should guide the daily actions and attitudes of every Liberian.

He also called on citizens to continue supporting initiatives aimed at fostering reconciliation, empowering young people, and strengthening communities across the country.

The Liberian businessman particularly encouraged the youth to remain law-abiding and committed to contributing positively to national development in the interest of a peaceful and prosperous Liberia.

He noted that young people have a major role to play in shaping the future of the country and urged them to reject violence and become ambassadors of peace and unity within their respective communities.

Breaking News:

Defense Seeks Fresh Trial in Explosive US$6.2M Economic Sabotage Case After Divided Jury Verdict

Monrovia, Liberia – The legal battle surrounding Liberia’s controversial US$6.2 million economic sabotage case has entered a dramatic new phase, with defense lawyers for former Acting Justice Minister Cllr. Nyenati Tuan and former National Security Advisor Jefferson S. Karmoh filing a major Motion for New Trial before Criminal Court “C”.

The motion comes just days after a divided jury delivered one of the most debated verdicts in recent Liberian judicial history — acquitting former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah, Jr. and former FIA Comptroller D. Moses P. Cooper on all charges while returning guilty verdicts and hung counts against several co-defendants.

The defendants were prosecuted by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) over allegations tied to the transfer and use of over US$6.2 million and L$1 billion reportedly allocated for national security operations during the final months of former President George Weah’s administration.

Charges in the indictment included economic sabotage, theft of property, money laundering, criminal facilitation, conspiracy, fraud on the internal revenue of Liberia, and misuse of public money.

But in a strongly worded post-verdict filing now before Judge Ousman F. Feika, defense lawyers argue that the jury’s guilty verdicts against Tuan and Karmoh are legally defective, unsupported by evidence, and inconsistent with the acquittals handed down to the prosecution’s alleged “principal actors.”

At the center of the motion is the defense’s argument that prosecutors failed to present direct evidence proving that either Nyenati Tuan or Jefferson Karmoh personally stole, received, concealed, converted, or benefited from government funds.

The defense says the prosecution’s case depended largely on assumptions, interpretations of official communications, and circumstantial inferences rather than hard evidence linking the accused to criminal conduct.

One key issue highlighted in the filing concerns a September 5, 2023 communication authored by Cllr. Tuan while serving as Acting Justice Minister and head of the Joint Security apparatus.

According to the motion, prosecutors used the letter as evidence of conspiracy and facilitation. However, defense lawyers insist the communication merely informed the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) that funding for Joint Security operations had been secured and that the FIA had been selected as the financial channel for disbursement.

Perhaps the most politically explosive portion of the motion is the defense’s claim that the acquittals of Samuel Tweah and Moses Cooper effectively collapsed the prosecution’s entire conspiracy narrative.

Defense lawyers argue that the government consistently portrayed Tweah as the “central figure” who allegedly authorized the controversial transfers, while Cooper was accused of physically withdrawing FIA cheques.

According to the motion, the jury’s rejection of criminal liability against both men makes the convictions against Tuan and Karmoh irrational and contradictory.

“If the jury acquitted Cooper — the alleged payee and physical withdrawer of the funds — the same jury could not rationally convict Tuan of theft absent separate evidence,” the filing contends.

The motion also maintains that conspiracy charges cannot survive once jurors rejected the alleged underlying criminal scheme involving Tweah.

RAL Leadership-Elect Engages Reporters in River Cess County, Unveils Reform Agenda

For Immediate Release

April 29, 2026

MONROVIA, Liberia — The leadership-elect of the Reporters Association of Liberia (RAL), headed by President-elect J. H. Webster Clayeh, has begun its outreach efforts with an interactive engagement with reporters in Cestos City, River Cess County.

The engagement was led by Secretary-General-elect Blamo N. Toe, who, on behalf of the incoming leadership, held a productive dialogue aimed at strengthening inclusion, rebuilding trust and outlining the new administration’s priorities.

Reform Agenda Takes Center Stage

Addressing reporters, Toe articulated the transformative agenda of President-elect Clayeh, emphasizing a commitment to institutional strengthening and broader inclusion.

Key priorities outlined include the establishment of a comprehensive national database for all RAL members, expansion of professional training opportunities, and improved communication of policy decisions affecting members across the country.

Toe also highlighted plans to implement a more inclusive governance structure that ensures all counties have a voice in decision-making processes through localized leadership frameworks to coordinate activities and provide timely updates, particularly in emergencies involving members.

Reporters Welcome Engagement, Raise Concerns

Reporters in River Cess County welcomed the initiative, describing the engagement as a timely and important step toward reconnecting the association with its grassroots membership.

Several journalists noted longstanding concerns about limited access to RAL activities, with some admitting they had little to no knowledge of the association’s operations, including both outgoing and incoming leadership.

They called on the new leadership to prioritize collaboration, transparency and capacity building, particularly in areas such as fact-checking and professional development.

Commitment to Inclusive and Responsive Leadership

In response, Toe acknowledged the concerns raised and reaffirmed the leadership-elect’s commitment to delivering meaningful reforms that reflect the needs of all members.

He stressed that the success of the new administration will depend on strong collaboration and active participation from journalists across Liberia.

“The concerns raised here are valid, and we are committed to addressing them through inclusive leadership and practical reforms,” Toe said. “But we will also rely on your support and cooperation as we work together to build a stronger and more responsive RAL.”

Toward a Stronger National Association

The River Cess engagement forms part of the incoming leadership’s efforts to reconnect with members, particularly in counties that have historically felt excluded from the association’s activities.

Officials say such engagements will continue as the new leadership prepares to assume office, with a focus on restoring confidence, strengthening professional standards, and repositioning RAL as a vibrant and effective voice for journalists in Liberia.

Aspirants Urged to Demonstrate Impact Ahead of 2029 Elections in District #16

Monrovia, Liberia — Roger M. Doe, a youth and student advocate in District #16, has issued a strong call to would-be political aspirants, urging them to prioritize tangible development efforts over rhetoric as the 2029 general elections approach.

In a statement addressed to emerging candidates, Doe emphasized that residents of the district have endured prolonged economic hardship and are increasingly demanding meaningful improvements in their living conditions.

“For far too long, our people have struggled to improve their material conditions,” Doe noted. “Yet, some individuals remain comfortable with their resources while making little or no meaningful contribution to the lives of the people they seek to lead.”

The statement comes at a time when early political conversations are beginning to surface around the 2029 elections, with both familiar and new names reportedly considering bids for public office in the district.

Doe cautioned that voters are becoming more discerning and are likely to reject empty promises in favor of proven performance. According to him, the era of relying solely on political popularity or campaign-season engagement is fading.

“Our people deserve far better than political rhetoric,” he said. “In 2029, they will reward those who have made real contributions to improving their lives—not those who only show up during elections.”

Highlighting key development priorities, Doe pointed to the urgent need for job creation, support for small businesses, improved access to education, clean drinking water, and better sanitation facilities across the district.

He stressed that these challenges are not insurmountable but require deliberate action and people-centered leadership.

“As 2029 draws closer, aspirants must understand that populism alone will not outweigh impact,” Doe added. “The people will reward consistency, integrity, and results.”

The statement concludes with a call for immediate action, urging aspiring leaders to begin implementing projects that directly benefit communities rather than waiting for the campaign period.

Political observers note that such early messaging reflects a growing expectation among citizens for accountability and performance-based leadership, signaling a potentially more issue-driven electoral process in the years ahead.
