President Weah Issues Executive Order 119 To Protect Domestic Manufacturers, Stimulate Economic Growth

Monrovia, Liberia - The President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah has issued an Executive Order imposing subcharge on a few imported goods or raw materials in order to protect domestic manufacturers and stimulate economic growth.

Executive Order 119, which was issued Thursday, June 8, 2023, takes immediate effect, and it seeks to solidify the gains realized under Executive Order No. 103, and it is to continue to stimulate economic growth in the Liberian economy.

The Executive Order is in recognition of the increased need to continue the stimulation of local manufacturing, especially after years of slowdown in economic activities due to the COVID 19 pandemic and its ensuing economic shocks.

Executive Order 119 is government's way of recognizing the need to provide incentive for domestic job creation as envisage under Pillar 2 (Economy and Job) of the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD) by protecting local businesses from unfair competition from international brands of locally manufactured goods.

The Executive Order imposes a local industry development surcharge on the importation of certain goods and/or raw materials that are imported in such quantity and manner that may injure or undermine the survival of local manufacturers.

According to the Executive Order, such products and rates shall be published by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.

It is noted that there shall be a transitional period of 60 days before the application of surcharges.

This period is meant to accommodate for affected goods already ordered and in transit to Liberia or with confirmed shipping dates as of the effective date of this Executive Order.

The Liberian Constitution grants the President Executive Power to issue Executive Orders in the Public interest, either to meet an emergency or to correct situations that can not await the lengthy legislative process.

Some of the products captured under this category and coded include flour, confectionery, wafer, nail ( other than zinc hooked-nail and ring nail), zinc (Corrugated Steel Steel), and cement.

Others listed are plastic wares, soap, bleach, eggs, tissue, paper towels, soft drinks, deformed bars, steel rods, metal scrap exports, etc.

President Weah Makes Additional Appointments in Government

Monrovia, Liberia โ€“ The President of Liberia, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, nominated Madam Princess Tulkorlon as Deputy Minister for Culture and Tourism at the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICAT).

Earlier, Dr. Weah nominated three commissioners to the Board of Directors for Tax Appeal. The nominated commissioners are Messrs. Alfred S. Gibson, Boka Wreh, and George L. Wortuah.

President Weah also appointed former Chief Justice Cllr. Francis S. Korkpor, Sr. as Governmentโ€™s Representative to the Board of Directors, ArcelorMittal Liberia Holding Limited. His appointment takes immediate effect.

Additionally, the Liberian Chief Executive has named Madam Martha Korpu member of the Board of Commissioners of the Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC).

Besides the former Chief Justice, the rest of the nominations are subject to confirmation by the Honorable Liberian Senate.

The President-elect of the B**g University Students Association - African Methodist Episcopal University Chapter, Morris D. W. Kerkulah is hailing Electoral District #3 Representative, Josiah Marvin Cole for providing fifty thousand (50,000.00LD) Liberian dollars towards their inaugural program.

The leadership said the money is the lawmaker's initial contribution towards their program.

BUSA-AMEU officials will be inducted into their various offices this Friday in Monrovia.

On his official page, Mr. Kerkulah thanked Rep. Cole for being cognizant of the many challenges that have engulfed the student community in the country.

"BUSA-AMEU just received 50k LD from Hon J Marvin Cole ahead of our inaugural program on Friday as his initial contributions to students ' education", he posted on his official page.

The leadership said it sees Rep. Cole's contribution as " a great relief", and is therefore encouraging other prominent sons and daughters of the county to follow the good example of the firebrand lawmaker.

"The leadership sees Hon Cole's contribution as a great relief and is therefore encouraging other leaders and prominent citizens of the county to follow suit", Mr. Kerkulah said.

The cause of educating the young people of our county is in true fulfillment of the fact that " young people are the future leaders of our nation". He concluded.

Since his election in 2017, Rep. Josiah Marvin Cole has been instrumental in educating young B**gese who are desirous of going to school.

At present, Rep. Cole has more than one hundred students attending the prestigious Cuttington University in Suakoko, and also has students in almost all the grade schools in Gbarnga and its environs.

According to the post, the 50k LD was donated Wednesday morning to the officials-elect of that organization.

B**g- Residents of the Barrow Quarter community call on President Weah to extend the Housing Unit Project.

Several Residents of the Barrow Quarter community in Gbarnga are calling on the George Weah lead government to extend the President's Housing Unit Project to their community.

Barrow Quarter community is located in the heart of Gbarnga City, B**g County.

According to some residents of the community, some of the houses they currently occupied were built in the 60s.

" The houses are dilapidated and we don't have the capacities, financially to reconstruct them at the moment, and we want President Weah to please extend his government's Housing Unit Project for us here" they explained.

The George Weah Government could make a break in the vote reach County if he quickly responds to the citizens and intervenes ahead of the 2023 elections.

Hundred of Nimbans have endorsed the second-term bid of President George Manneh Weah.

The citizens under the banner "Nimba for Weah" said that based on the current development trend of the country under the CDC's flag bearer, there is no need for change in October this year.

They named the payment of WAEC's fees for all 12-graders across the country, the pavement of roads across the country, the er****on of modern markets in Montserrado and other parts of the country, the provision of jobs for typical Liberians as some of the indelible marks of the current government under the leadership of his excellency, President Weah that he should be given another six years for.

The Nimba County citizens in their petition said for such monumental developments to continue, President Weah fully deserves another term to continue and conclude these initiatives.

They have vowed to vigorously campaign for the reelection of the CDC government on October 10 this year.

The "Nimba for Weah" petition was launched on Friday in the county.

36-Year-Old Man Allegedly Kills Girlfriend Over Breakup In B**g

A 36-year-old man is currently undergoing a Police investigation in Gbarnga for allegedly killing his girlfriend in Gbelequelleh, B**g County Electoral District Two.

According to Police Preliminary findings, defendant Sampson Suah allegedly killed his girlfriend, Rachael Mankpalla for attempting to break up with him.

Addressing a press conference Wednesday, B**g Countyโ€™s Police Commander Fasu V. Sheriff disclosed that the lifeless body of the victim was discovered in a culvert along the Gbelequelleh-Gbarnga Highway after she had gone missing for two days.

He said a 15 men juror set up to examine the body of the late Rachael Mankpalla established that there was foul play.

According to the jurorsโ€™ report, there were bruises seen on the body of the Victim something they believed might have led to her untimely demise.

For his part, defendant Sampson Suah voluntarily admitted killing victim Rachael Mankpalla, 37, on grounds that she attempted to break up with him for another man in the Community.

Sampson indicated that Rachael was mistakenly killed by him in a fistfight after being provoked.

Meanwhile, defendant Sampson is pleading with the national government through the Ministry of Justice to forgive him; citing that his action wasn't intentional.

Suah who was arrested on April 8, 2023, by the Community Watch Forum in District tTwois currently in custody awaiting a Police investigation and subsequent Court trial.
