Shadow Over Justice: Corruption, Fear, and Unanswered Deaths in Srilanka
------------
Sri Lanka has long struggled with allegations of political corruption, abuse of power, and failures within the justice system. In recent years, a series of controversial incidents involving whistleblowers, journalists, investigators, and individuals connected to sensitive cases have intensified public concern about the state of democracy and the rule of law in the country.
Many Sri Lankans now question whether those who expose corruption, illegal activities, or abuses by powerful figures can truly remain safe. The repeated emergence of mysterious deaths, disappearances, and intimidation has created a climate of fear and uncertainty.
One of the most controversial recent allegations concerns the disappearance of 323 containers from the Port of Colombo. The issue became widely discussed after activist Dan Priyasad reportedly lodged complaints with law enforcement regarding the matter. According to claims circulating in political and media circles, he was later killed under suspicious circumstances. Critics argue that the failure to transparently investigate the case has deepened public distrust in state institutions.
Similarly, Nandana Gunathilaka, who allegedly exposed corruption connected to the current administration, reportedly died under mysterious circumstances. Questions surrounding his death remain unanswered, further strengthening fears among anti-corruption activists and civil society observers.
Another controversial case involves Ranga Rajapaksha, who was associated with exposing alleged Treasury-related financial fraud. His sudden and unexplained death raised additional concerns regarding the safety of individuals connected to sensitive financial investigations in Sri Lanka.
The death of Kapila Chandrasekara also became highly controversial. Reports and political accusations claimed that he faced pressure to provide false testimony regarding the Airbus transaction investigations. Allegedly, he refused to provide fabricated evidence and later died under suspicious circumstances. Although authorities have not officially confirmed many of these claims, the incident contributed to growing public suspicion surrounding politically connected investigations.
At the same time, concerns continue regarding allegations involving military-linked crimes, illegal arms operations, and organized corruption. Sri Lankan journalist and investigator Saliya has reportedly exposed allegations connected to the murder of an Army officer, the alleged importation of weapons through the 323 containers, and broader corruption claims involving powerful figures. According to supporters and associates, he is currently missing in Bangkok under mysterious circumstances, raising fears about transnational intimidation against journalists and dissidents.
These incidents reflect a wider crisis facing Sri Lanka’s legal and democratic institutions. Human rights organizations, journalists, and civil society groups have repeatedly warned that weak investigations, political interference, and lack of accountability are eroding public trust in the justice system.
A functioning democracy depends on independent courts, transparent investigations, and the protection of journalists and whistleblowers. When individuals connected to corruption investigations die mysteriously or disappear without credible investigations, the public inevitably begins to fear that justice is selective and power outweighs law.
Sri Lanka’s history already includes painful memories of assassinations, disappearances, and attacks on media workers. The country continues to face international scrutiny regarding freedom of expression, rule of law, and protection of human rights. Without independent investigations into controversial deaths and disappearances, suspicions will continue to grow both locally and internationally.
For Sri Lanka to rebuild trust, authorities must ensure impartial investigations into every allegation, regardless of political influence. Journalists, activists, and whistleblowers should be protected—not threatened. Justice cannot survive where fear dominates public life.
The future of Sri Lanka’s democracy depends not only on elections or political slogans, but on whether truth can be spoken without risking disappearance, imprisonment, or death.
