Sri Padaya – The Sacred Mountain of Sri Lanka

Sri Padaya, also known as Adam’s Peak or Sri Pada, is one of the most beautiful and sacred mountains in Sri Lanka. Rising about 2,243 meters above sea level, it stands proudly in the central highlands near Hatton. The mountain is famous not only for its natural beauty but also for its spiritual importance to people of many religions.

At the top of Sri Padaya, there is a footprint-shaped mark on a rock. This is believed to be the sacred footprint of Lord Buddha by Buddhists, Lord Shiva by Hindus, and Adam by Muslims and Christians. Because of this, Sri Padaya is a symbol of peace, faith, and unity among all people.

Climbing Sri Padaya is a special adventure. Most travelers start their climb at night, following a path lit by thousands of lamps. When they reach the top, they can see the sunrise, known as “Ira Sevaya.” Watching the first rays of the sun spread across the sky is a truly magical experience.

The best time to visit is during the Sri Padaya season, from December to May, when the weather is good and the path is full of friendly pilgrims. You can hear the sound of bells, prayers, and chanting all along the way.
