Retina: the neural gateway where light is transformed into vision through precise cellular organization and signal processing.

The retina is a highly specialized, multilayered neural tissue lining the inner surface of the eye, responsible for converting light into electrical signals that the brain interprets as vision. Incoming light passes through the inner retinal layers before reaching the photoreceptors rods for dim light and peripheral vision, and cones for color and high-acuity vision where phototransduction begins. These signals are then transmitted to bipolar cells and modulated by horizontal and amacrine cells, enhancing contrast and refining visual input. Finally, ganglion cells generate action potentials, and their axons form the optic nerve, carrying visual information to the brain.

This diagram highlights the organized retinal layers from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) to the nerve fiber layer and emphasizes the concept of the inverted retina, which is essential for efficient visual processing and clinical understanding..

Old eye CNV means old (inactive) Choroidal Neovascularization.

What is CNV?

CNV happens when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina. These vessels can leak blood or fluid and damage vision.

What does “old CNV” mean?
• The CNV is not active now
• No current bleeding or leakage
• Usually replaced by scar tissue
• Vision loss (if any) is often permanent, but stable
• It does not need injections unless it becomes active again

Common causes of CNV
• Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
• High myopia (short sight)
• Previous eye inflammation or injury
• Diabetic eye disease
• Certain retinal disorders

Symptoms of old CNV
• Blurred or distorted central vision
• Dark or blank spot in vision (scotoma)
• Vision usually does not worsen suddenly

Follow-up & care
• Regular eye checkups (OCT / fundus exam)
• Monitor vision at home (Amsler grid)
• Control diabetes, blood pressure
• Stop smoking (very important)
