The temple is believed to have a history dating back about 2000 years. Historically it was known as Kumbaltissa Ariyagala Vehera, in honor of its chief priest. Popular stories hold that the half-finished Buddha statue was carved by King Walagamba himself while hiding in these caves during foreign invasions. It is said that the king left the area before he could finish carving the statue, leaving it unfinished. (source: Wikipedia)
