"As the regulator and the apex tourism body in Sri Lanka, the Tourism Development Authority is committed with our efforts to revive the industry and support the millions that depend on tourism. We are focused on identifying solutions with a long-term plan to realign tourism with a futuristic outlook in mind. It is imperative that all stakeholders and citizens contribute towards this cause by having a positive outlook towards tourism and help promote our beautiful island by disseminating positive messaging, which would help attract tourism and contribute towards the further development of provincial economies and rural communities."

Rural and Community centric tourism
World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has declared that World Tourism Day (WTD) 2022 will be commemorated under the theme “Rethinking Tourism” to focus on the future of tourism. As the sector recovers and builds on unprecedented political and public recognition, UNWTO will highlight the opportunity to rethink how we plan tourism in a post covid era.
Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) is planning to celebrate this year's World Tourism Day focusing on “Rural and Community Centric Tourism”.
SLTDA hopes to utilize this opportunity to boost the destination’s image and create awareness on the benefits of tourism among the communities.
The main event commemorating World Tourism Day 2022 would be held in Habarana.

International Air Transport Association (IATA), trade association of global airlines consist of more than 290 airlines and representing over 120 countries worldwide appointed Buddhika Hewawasam as their country head for Sri Lanka. Since 2008, IATA has not appointed a country manager for Sri Lanka and operations handles remotely from their overseas offices.
IATA’s operation in a country ranging from global and national policy development, representing airlines in national and international level to advocacy and consultancy work for airline industry partners, and offering industry solutions and world class aviation training through the IATA training centres. IATA also work closely with governments for developing national aviation plans and frameworks of the country and support country’s effort on developing aviation and related industries.
Buddhika Hewawasam is an industry veteran with over 20 years of experience in aviation and tourism industries. In his tenure at the national carrier, he managed to develop an award-winning aviation academy for the airline and attracted considerable amount of foreign exchange through offering training for foreign students in Sri Lanka. Also, he managed Sri Lankan holidays, tour operating arm of the airline before joining IATA and made considerable foreign income through attracting tourists to the country amidst of recent crisis.
IATA being the largest trade body in aviation show their commitment towards development of Sri Lankas aviation industry by made the appointment in a critical time.

The sustainable destination development and management training for Provincial Officers for the National Sustainable Tourism Certification (NSTC) commenced today.
The training will focus on educating the participants on sustainable tourism and the development of a practical strategic action plan for each of the provinces.
