Dr Sean Perera’s debut novel, a Butterfly, writes Gratiaen Prize winner Dr Vihanga Perera, pushes past half-hearted representations of homosexual and homo-erotic energies that, over the past two decades have received global attention.
a Butterfly tells a coming-of-age story about a young gay Sri Lankan man in the seemingly cocooned safety of Australia, while homosexuality is punishable by law in his homeland, Sri Lanka. The protagonist’s name, Pathanga, which in Sanskrit means butterfly, is also pejorative slang for homosexual in Sri Lanka, where this novel originates. Written in four parts, a Butterfly narrates Pathanga’s family relationships, friendships, sexual awakening and most importantly explorations of himself.
Copies of a Butterfly are available from Sarasavi Sri Lanka bookstores.

For Le***an Visibility Week, we asked le***an activists who partner with the Human Dignity Trust to share what this week means to them.
Rosanna Flamer-Caldera – Sri Lanka
'This year, Le***an Visibility Week is as important as ever given the surge in the anti-rights movement we are seeing across the world, including in my own country, Sri Lanka. Archaic penal codes and customs force le***ans into heterosexual marriages where they are violated physically and mentally. And, four years after the CEDAW case, Rosanna Flamer-Caldera v Sri Lanka, our successive governments continue to stall on decriminalisation.
'Women's rights are in more danger now than ever. We must fight back – not just q***r women, but all women – because if one of us hurts, we all hurt!’
Rosanna Flamer-Caldera was the complainant in a case brought against Sri Lanka at the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women in 2022. The Committee ruled that the criminalisation of le***an and bisexual women violates the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. She is the Executive Director of EQUAL GROUND, a Sri Lankan civil society organisation working towards equality for all sexual orientations and gender identities, as well as human rights for everyone.
Read Human Dignity Trust's landmark report, Breaking the Silence (revised edition), the first ever report to analyse how laws against same-sex activity specifically impact le***an and bisexual women https://www.humandignitytrust.org/resources/breaking-the-silence-2/

“In this deeply moving episode of Older Q***r Voices, I sit down with Rosanna Flamer-Caldera, a le***an activist from Sri Lanka who has spent
decades fighting for dignity, equality and basic human rights in a country
where being q***r is still criminalised.
Her story is not just one of activism. It is about courage, about choosing to
return home when it would have been easier to stay away, and about building
movements where none existed. From founding Equal Ground to challenging systems that continue to silence LGBTQ+ lives, Rosanna reminds us what it means to stand firm in who you are.” Raga D’Silva.
