Warm congratulations to Ms. Melissa Aluwihare on winning the Falling Walls Lab Sri Lanka 2026, organised by the DAAD Regional Office New Delhi and the University of Colombo in Colombo on 26 May 2026. ๐Ÿ’กโœจ

Falling Walls Lab is a unique pitch competition that gives young researchers and innovators a platform to present their ideas, from research projects to business and social initiatives.

Ambassador Dr. Felix Neumann personally congratulated Ms. Aluwihare on her inspiring idea on โ€œbreaking the wall of delayed AMR detectionโ€ and wished her every success for the journey ahead. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Her pitch focused on metabolic detection with AI-powered colour analysis for faster and lower-cost antibiotic susceptibility testing, with particular relevance for developing countries. ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿค–

The Sri Lankan-German Business Forum 2026 officially kicked off this week in Colombo, bringing together business leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and representatives from the German and Sri Lankan public and private sectors to strengthen trade and investment ties between our two countries. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Organised by AHK Sri Lanka with the support of the German Embassy in Colombo, the three-day forum shines a spotlight on Sri Lankaโ€™s growing potential as a destination for investment โ€” especially in the maritime and logistics sectors ๐Ÿšขโš“

The opening day at TRACE Expert City featured an exciting startup and innovation event, where Sri Lankan startups and tech companies showcased their ideas, digital solutions, and entrepreneurial talent to an international audience ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ

Ambassador Dr. Felix Neumann remarked:
โ€œSri Lanka and Germany are a good fit in the area of innovation and technology. This kick-off and start-up night is an opportunity to share resources and expertise. It fosters innovation by combining different skills and perspectives.โ€

Mr. Tobias Pierlings, Head of Division for External Economic Policy South and Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Oceania at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), is currently visiting Sri Lanka ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ on the occasion of the Sri Lankan-German Business Forum in Colombo.

During the visit, Ambassador Dr. Felix Neumann and Mr. Pierlings met with Mr. Pradeep Saputhanthri, Secretary to the Prime Minister, for productive discussions on further strengthening Germanyโ€“Sri Lanka bilateral relations and expanding economic cooperation ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ

Mr. Pierlings also met with World Bank Sri Lanka Country Director Mr. Gevorg Sargsyan to discuss ongoing and future development initiatives in Sri Lanka, with a focus on port development โš“, tourism ๐Ÿ๏ธ, agribusiness ๐ŸŒฑ, and renewable energy ๐ŸŒโšก โ€” sectors with strong potential for sustainable growth in Sri Lanka.

We were delighted to welcome Mr. Arthur Rapp, the new Director of the DAAD India Regional Office, to the German Embassy on his first visit to Sri Lanka in this capacity. ๐Ÿค๐ŸŒ

During the visit, Ambassador Dr. Felix Neumann, Mr. Rapp, and our teams exchanged ideas on how to further strengthen cooperation in higher education and research between Germany and Sri Lanka, creating more opportunities for students, researchers, and institutions in both countries. ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

A special highlight of the visit was the opportunity to personally meet with the DAAD scholarship awardees, who have been awarded the prestigious DAAD scholarships for their upcoming studies and research in Germany, and to hand over their scholarship certificates. ๐ŸŽ“โœจ

This yearโ€™s recipients include two undergraduate students from University of Kelaniya and Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka who received the University Summer Courses Scholarship (HSK) to study German Language; five working professionals who received the Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS) scholarships pursuing studies in Field of Natural Sciences and one PhD candidate who received the DAAD Doctoral Programmes in Germany research in the Field of Microbiology.

These scholarships open doors to academic excellence, research collaboration, and new global opportunities in Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ชโœจ

As part of the Visitorsโ€™ Programme of the German Federal Foreign Office, Haridhu Abeygoonaratne was invited to take part in a themed trip to Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช on โ€œGermany as a Technology and Business Hub,โ€ following his nomination by the German Embassy. ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ

During the visit to Berlin, Dresden, and Hannover, participants explored how Germany is advancing in areas such as technology, innovation, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and digital transformation. The programme also provided opportunities to exchange ideas and gain insights into Germanyโ€™s business and innovation landscape.

As the Second Vice Chairman of Sri Lanka Association for Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM), Haridhu highlighted the growing opportunities for collaboration between Germany and Sri Lankaโ€™s IT/BPM sectors:

โ€œThe โ€˜Germany as a Technology Hubโ€™ programme has underscored a significant shift: AI is no longer experimental; it is being deployed at scale across various industries. For Sri Lankaโ€™s IT/BPM industry, this shift presents a substantial opportunity. As Germany tackles talent shortages and accelerates digital transformation, the demand for trusted global technology partners is increasing.โ€
