Republic Day of Sri Lanka is observed on 22nd May each year. It marks an important milestone in the country’s political history — the day when Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972. Prior to this, Sri Lanka was known as the Dominion of Ceylon, a constitutional monarchy under the British Crown, even after gaining independence in 1948.

On 22 May 1972, Sri Lanka adopted a new republican constitution, officially removing the British monarch as the head of state. As a result, the country changed its name from Ceylon to Sri Lanka, reflecting a move towards national identity and full sovereignty.

With the new constitution:

Sri Lanka became a fully independent republic.

The position of Governor-General was replaced by a President, and William Gopallawa became the first non-executive President.

The new republic was no longer under the symbolic authority of the British monarchy.

Although this day holds great historical significance, Republic Day is not a public holiday in Sri Lanka and is not celebrated on a large scale. In contrast, Independence Day on 4 February—which marks independence from British rule in 1948—is widely commemorated with national celebrations.

In essence, Republic Day represents Sri Lanka's transition to full republican status and self-governance, an important step in its journey as a sovereign nation.

ශ්‍රී ලංකා ජනරජ දිනය සෑම වසරකම මැයි 22 වන දින සමරනු ලැබේ. එය රටේ දේශපාලන ඉතිහාසයේ වැදගත් සන්ධිස්ථානයක් සනිටුහන් කරයි - 1972 දී ශ්‍රී ලංකාව ජනරජයක් බවට පත් වූ දිනය. මෙයට පෙර, 1948 දී නිදහස ලැබීමෙන් පසුව පවා, ශ්‍රී ලංකාව බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය කිරීටය යටතේ ව්‍යවස්ථාපිත රාජාණ්ඩුවක් වන ඩොමීනියන් ඔෆ් සිලෝන් ලෙස හැඳින්විණි.

1972 මැයි 22 වන දින, ශ්‍රී ලංකාව නව ජනරජ ව්‍යවස්ථාවක් සම්මත කර ගත් අතර, එමඟින් බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය රජතුමා රාජ්‍ය නායකයා ලෙස නිල වශයෙන් ඉවත් කරන ලදී. එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙස, ජාතික අනන්‍යතාවය සහ පූර්ණ ස්වෛරීභාවය කරා යන ගමනක් පිළිබිඹු කරමින්, රට එහි නම සිලෝන් සිට ශ්‍රී ලංකාව ලෙස වෙනස් කළේය.

නව ආණ්ඩුක්‍රම ව්‍යවස්ථාව සමඟ:

ශ්‍රී ලංකාව සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම ස්වාධීන ජනරජයක් බවට පත් විය.

ආණ්ඩුකාර ජෙනරාල් තනතුර ජනාධිපතිවරයෙකු විසින් ප්‍රතිස්ථාපනය කරන ලද අතර, විලියම් ගොපල්ලව පළමු විධායක නොවන ජනාධිපතිවරයා බවට පත්විය.

නව ජනරජය තවදුරටත් බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය රාජාණ්ඩුවේ සංකේතාත්මක අධිකාරිය යටතේ නොතිබුණි.

මෙම දිනය ඓතිහාසික වශයෙන් ඉතා වැදගත් වුවද, ජනරජ දිනය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ රජයේ නිවාඩු දිනයක් නොවන අතර මහා පරිමාණයෙන් සමරනු නොලැබේ. ඊට වෙනස්ව, 1948 දී බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය පාලනයෙන් නිදහස ලැබීම සනිටුහන් කරන පෙබරවාරි 4 වන දින නිදහස් දිනය ජාතික සැමරුම් සමඟ පුළුල් ලෙස සමරනු ලැබේ.

සාරාංශයක් ලෙස, ජනරජ දිනය ශ්‍රී ලංකාව පූර්ණ ජනරජ තත්ත්වයකට සහ ස්වයං පාලනයකට මාරුවීම නියෝජනය කරන අතර එය ස්වෛරී ජාතියක් ලෙස එහි ගමනේ වැදගත් පියවරකි.

இலங்கையின் குடியரசுத் தினம் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் மே 22ஆம் தேதி கடைக்கோடி செய்து அனுசரிக்கப்படுகிறது. இது நாட்டின் அரசியல் வரலாற்றில் ஒரு முக்கியமான படிக்கட்டாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது — 1972ஆம் ஆண்டு இலங்கை ஒரு குடியரசாக மாற்றம் பெற்ற தினம்.

கவர்னர் ஜெனரல் பதவி நீக்கப்பட்டு, அதன் மாற்றாக ஜனாதிபதி என்ற பதவி உருவாக்கப்பட்டது.

வில்லியம் கோபல்லவா இலங்கையின் முதல் (அழுத்தம் இல்லாத) ஜனாதிபதியாக நியமிக்கப்பட்டார்.

இலங்கை இனி பிரித்தானிய மகாராணியின் 상பதத்திலிருந்து விடுபட்டது.

இத்தனை முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்ததானாலும், குடியரசுத் தினம் ஒரு பொது விடுமுறை அல்ல மற்றும் வெகு விமரிசையாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுவதில்லை. இதற்குப் பதிலாக, பிப்ரவரி 4ஆம் தேதி கொண்டாடப்படும் சுதந்திர தினம் — பிரித்தானிய ஆட்சி முடிவுக்கு வந்ததை நினைவுகூரும் நாள் — நாடு முழுவதும் பெரிய அளவில் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.

மொத்தத்தில், குடியரசுத் தினம் என்பது இலங்கையின் முழுமையான குடியரசு அமைப்புக்கான மாற்றத்தை குறிக்கிறது, இது ஒரு சுயாட்சி கொண்ட சுதந்திரமான தேசமாக ஆன முக்கியமான கட்டமாக கருதப்படுகிறது.
