April 2026 — Chinese automaker BYD Company Limited continues its rapid global expansion, but a wave of large-scale recalls and aggressive price reductions is raising concerns among industry observers.

In 2025, BYD recalled more than 210,000 vehicles worldwide, including over 115,000 units for battery-related defects and design issues affecting critical systems. Additional recalls covered nearly 89,000 plug-in hybrids due to power battery inconsistencies and about 97,000 vehicles linked to steering-related safety risks.

Analysts note that these defects involve core vehicle systems—battery integrity, steering, and power delivery—rather than minor issues. Reported risks include sudden power loss and potential water intrusion in battery packs.

At the same time, BYD’s pricing strategy is reshaping the market. Models such as the Sealion 6 are now priced at around ₱1.5 million, positioning them as among the lowest priced hybrid SUVs globally. Comparable non BYD models typically range from ₱1.7 million to over ₱2.5 million, indicating a significant price compression.

Experts attribute the lower pricing to mass production and scale efficiencies, but warn that rapid expansion may place increasing pressure on quality assurance systems.

For consumers, the shift presents a clear trade-off: unprecedented affordability and innovation, weighed against questions of long-term reliability and support infrastructure.
