Stretching out along a great arc of sunny coastline from Kirinda to Hambantota, there are some of the best-known Sri Lankan beaches including Jungle Beach, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa, Tallala, and Tangalle. One of the greatest attractions of the South Coast cruises is the opportunity to experience the world’s largest mammal, the Blue Whale, along with many other species of whales and dolphins. Onshore visits include the UNESCO world heritage city of Galle Fort, the ancient Dondra Lighthouse at the southernmost point of Sri Lanka as well as turtle and migrant bird conservation projects. What’s more, unforgettable sunrises and sunsets are also a highlight of our southern cruises.

Mahiyangana - Whilst appearing to be a deceptively quiet little town, it boasts of a rich cultural and historical heritage, hailing back centuries into Sri Lanka’s past. It's natural beauty is less explored and therefore remains unknown to many. Book your seat, the time is now

One of our very own Wildlife Lover & Nature Enthusiast photographer Shenik Pallewatte e his opinion on why we should travel on less visited National Parks of Sri Lanka
30/09/2021
Declared as a National park in 2015, it embraces the imposing Kalawewa and Balaluwewa water tanks, built by King Dhatusena in the 5th century. The park is over 6000 hectares, is home to elephants but with a notable feature – the herds have a great concentration of tuskers. Roughly only about seven percent of the male elephant population have tusks in Sri Lanka, which makes Kalawewa National park a magnificent site. As it is located in the dry zone when the water levels recede for the tank beds, a lush grassland reveals itself which attracts elephants, species of migratory and resident animals. As the park is open during the dry season, chances of such sightings are promising. The monsoon arrives in October through November and the grasslands disappear to give way to fill up reservoirs. Swimming elephants are a regular site with their trunks out of the surface of the water are a beautiful sight. Kalawewa, Sri Lanka’s lesser-known nature’s gem.

When the sun rises over this beautiful Island it activates another day of wild chronicles around the National parks of Sri Lanka. One such beautiful yet less known park is the Wasgamuwa National park. Situated between Matale and Polonnaruwa districts, Wasgamuwa derives from “Walasa” – Sloth bear and “Gamuwa” which means wood in Sinhala. For its name’s sake, the Sri Lankan sloth bear and large herds of elephants could be spotted within this park. Located 225Kms from Colombo, Wasgamuwa National Park is bordered by River Mahaweli Ganga and River Amban Ganga in east and west. Apart from Sloth bears and Elephants, other wildlife includes Purple-faced langur monkeys, wild boar, sambar and spotted deer, buffaloes, and very rarely, leopards. Among the reptiles are water monitors, mugger crocodiles.
Of the 143 species of birds reported at Wasgamuwa National Park are endemic Red-faced malkoha and Ceylon jungle fowl are a common sight in the park. Among the bird populations are Sri Lanka Trogon, racket-tailed drongo, endemic yellow fronted barbet, endemic Sri Lanka spurfowl, white-necked stork, and lesser adjutant stork.
Wasgamuwa National park, A Seldom treaded wild of the Sri Lankan ecosystem, thrives with rich wildlife which adds a unique essence to a nature lover’s thirst for adventure.”

Located in the Deep Southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, The Kumana National Park is a renowned bird sanctuary where a multitude of endemic and migratory bords breed. A paradise for Bird watchers and photographers, the Kumana National park tops the travel list of most wildlife enthusiasts. One of the most significant features of the park is the “Kumana Villu” – a 200-hectare natural swamp lake, fed by the “Kumbukkan Oya”. It is at this mangrove swamp that many water birds nest in May and June. Regular sightings include pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, heron, egrets, and little cormorants also, the very rare black-necked stork has been spotted here. Apart from the abundance of birdlife, Kumana is also home to elephants, leopards, Jackals, Wild Boar, and many more.

“Gal Oya is a less explored and one of the most remote Wilderness areas in Sri Lanka. The Senanayaka Samudra lake located in Gal Oya is the largest inland water body in the country has something quite spectacular happening in its waters. The elephant community which lives around the Gal Oya National park crosses the lake quite often and that has become their regular route down generations. A wild life enthusiast’s dream site, this has turned out to be the most spectacular way of watching elephants in the wild. The largest land animal swimming across a water body with it’s truck out of the surface is not something we come across every day. However this is a regular site at the Gal Oya Lodge. Water for Elephants maybe?”

The majestic Asian elephants are excellent swimmers and are rarely witnessed. However at the Gal Oya these animals could be seen swimming across the Senanayaka Samudra with their trunks used as snorkels. Captivating sight as it sounds the location too is ideally suited for these magnificent animals of Sri Lanka's wild.
