Encoding vs Encryption vs Hashing π
Encoding, encryption, and hashing are all techniques for transforming data from one format to another. However, they have different purposes and use different methods.
Encoding.
Encoding is the process of converting data from one format to another so that it can be understood by different systems. For example, encoding text into ASCII or Unicode makes it easier for computers to process and display the text. Encoding is a reversible process, meaning that the original data can be recovered from the encoded data.
Encryption.
Encryption is the process of converting data into a format that cannot be read without a special key. Encryption is used to protect the confidentiality of data, so that only authorized users can access it. Encryption is a two-way process, meaning that the original data can be recovered from the encrypted data using the decryption key.
Hashing.
Hashing is the process of converting data into a fixed-length string of characters. Hashing is used to verify the integrity of data, meaning that it can be used to detect if the data has been modified. Hashing is a one-way process, meaning that the original data cannot be recovered from the hash.
The below diagram provides a quick overview of all three techniques

What's the difference between the IPS and the IDS?
IPS and IDS are both security systems used to detect and prevent network-based threats, but they differ in their functionalities and approaches. Here's the difference between IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) and IDS (Intrusion Detection System):
Intrusion Detection System (IDS):
An IDS is a security system designed to monitor network traffic and identify potential security breaches or unauthorized activities. It analyzes network packets, system logs, and other data sources to detect suspicious or malicious behavior within the network. When an IDS identifies a potential threat, it generates an alert or notification to the network administrator or security team for further investigation and response. However, an IDS does not take active measures to block or prevent the detected threats.
Intrusion Prevention System (IPS):
An IPS, on the other hand, is a security system that not only detects potential threats like an IDS but also takes immediate action to prevent them. It not only alerts about security breaches but actively blocks and mitigates them. An IPS can be deployed in-line with network traffic flow, allowing it to inspect packets in real-time and take proactive measures to block suspicious or malicious activities. The actions taken by an IPS can include dropping packets, blocking IP addresses, or modifying firewall rules to prevent further access from potential attackers.
In summary, the main difference between IDS and IPS lies in their proactive nature. An IDS detects and alerts about potential security breaches, while an IPS goes a step further by actively preventing and blocking those threats in real-time. An IDS is more focused on monitoring and detection, while an IPS combines detection with prevention capabilities. The choice between an IDS and an IPS depends on the specific security needs and objectives of an organization.

Think twice π
βThis MiTM (Man in The Middle) attack is one of the many risk factors posed by public Wi-Fi. During this attack, public Wi-Fi users get tricked into connecting to malicious Wi-Fi networks and hotspots. Cybercriminals accomplish this by setting up Wi-Fi connections with names that resemble nearby businessesβ
