The African pied hornbill is a medium-sized bird, with males typically measuring around 50 centimetres (20 inches) in length and females slightly smaller. It has a distinctive appearance with a black body, white belly, and a large white patch on its wings. The bird's head is adorned with a large downward-curved black bill, which has a casque (a protrusion) on top. The eyes are surrounded by a patch of bare, blue skin.
