To wear white thoughtfully is, in part, to be aware of its inheritance without being imprisoned by it.

Still. White. New. A quiet beginning, held in the softness of Bengal Jamdani, where threads move like breath, light, deliberate, unhurried. Woven with restraint and held in stillness, it marks a gentle arrival into the year, where refinement needs no excess and newness does not announce itself, but simply is.

Not all New Year beginnings arrive in stillness.

Some are crossings, deliberate, steady, and quietly assured, as one moves from what has been into what is to come.

In this season of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, handwoven cloth becomes part of that passage, carrying intention not through grand declarations, but through movement, ritual, and presence.

Shot along the Negombo Lagoon, where fresh and salt water meet, the setting mirrors the moment itself, a gentle threshold. Here, life follows between land and tide, departure and return, much like the turning of the year.

A beginning, gently renewed, not marked by a moment, but felt as a crossing. In the spirit of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, where time pauses and life begins again, our handwoven textiles echo this quiet transition, deliberate, fluid, and enduring.

Set against the meeting waters of Negombo Lagoon, each crossing carries intention, a passage into new light, new rhythm, and new possibility.

A quiet return to self, as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year unfolds without haste. It is a moment not of beginnings announced, but of beginnings felt - gentle, unforced, and deeply personal.
Jamdani cotton, with its centuries-old lineage along river banks and weaving communities, carries this same spirit. Light against the skin, breathable in the island heat, and de ned by its delicate precision, it is a textile shaped not by urgency, but by patience, rhythm, and the steady discipline of the hand. Paired with simple metal jewellery from Rithihi, the composition remains intentional in its restraint.

Each piece chosen not to adorn excessively, but to endure, to sit quietly within time rather than chase it.

Together, they speak of a season approached with clarity and calm, where beauty is found in what is considered, what is lasting, and what is allowed to simply be.

Many of the sarees and textiles you nd at Rithihi are made by women. Women who have carried skills across decades that no institution has formally catalogued; who chose or fought for the right to work with their hands and earn from that work. This is why we think the many women-made pieces at Rithihi are small biographies. They are stories of our women who weave; worth wearing, collecting, and knowing.

There are kinds of knowledge that can never be written down. There is the tension intuition; the muscle memory of exactly how much pressure to apply to the warp against the weft to achieve a specic drape, something no specication sheet can
teach. There is rhythmic troubleshooting: the ability to hear a loom begin to misbehave before a thread actually snaps. And then there is the subtler literacy still understanding how the humidity of a particular day alters the tension of the thread.
