launches privacy campaign after backlash

WhatsApp has launched its first major privacy-focused advertising campaign in the UK.
It follows a customer backlash against changes to its terms and conditions, announced earlier this year.
The platform also said it is standing firm against pressure from governments, including the UK, to compromise on the way that it encrypts messages.
Authorities should "demand more security" rather than less, WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart told the BBC.

Apple has been charged with breaking EU competition rules over the way it runs its App Store.

It relates to charges brought two years ago by music streaming app Spotify which claimed that Apple was stifling innovation in that industry.

US charges ex-Zoom employee with shutting down Tiananmen Square events
-------------------------------------------

US prosecutors have charged a former Zoom employee with disrupting video meetings marking the anniversary of the 1989 crackdown on protests in Tiananmen Square on behalf of China's government.
The China-based executive, Xinjiang Jin, is accused of helping to terminate at least four video meetings in May and June, hosted by people based in the US.
A warrant is out for his arrest.
Zoom said it was co-operating with authorities. China has not commented on the case.
The California-based company said it had "terminated" the employee for violating its policies, and had "placed other employees on administrative leave pending the completion" of an internal investigation.
The pro-democracy protests and their suppression are strictly taboo in China.

Huawei: Uighur surveillance fears lead PR exec to quit

One of Huawei's European communications managers has resigned from the Chinese firm over concerns about its role in the surveillance of Muslim Uighurs.

Tommy Zwicky had worked in the company's Danish office for six months and was a former journalist.

It comes after internal Huawei documents were made public, which mentioned a "Uighur alarm" system that it had worked on with Chinese facial-recognition specialist Megvii in 2018.

Huawei said it opposed discrimination.

"We provide general-purpose connectivity products based on recognised industry standards, and we comply with ethics and governance systems around emerging technology," it told the BBC.

"We do not develop or sell systems that identify people by their ethnicity, and we do not condone the use of our technologies to discriminate against or oppress members of any community."

A spokeswoman for Megvii declined to comment, but the firm has previously said its systems are not designed to target or label specific ethnic groups.

It is believed that the Chinese government has detained up to a million Uighurs in Xinjiang province in what the state defines as "re-education camps".

Beijing has consistently denied mistreatment and says the camps are designed to stamp out terrorism and improve employment opportunities.
