Sri Lanka’s EV Transition Under Threat
The position taken by Sri Lanka Customs regarding the motor power of BYD vehicles is absolutely unsubstantiated.
For clarity: the Customs Ordinance simply mandates that the article imported must correspond to the declaration. This can be verified easily and quickly. Instead, the current stance is blocking consumers, disrupting trade, and derailing Sri Lanka’s EV transition — clearly against the National Interest. Sri Lanka Customs Parliament of Sri Lanka
What is more troubling is the silence of the The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Ceylon Motor Traders' Association and other importer associations.
This is not just about cars. It’s about every Sri Lankan commuter who wants affordable, efficient, and sustainable mobility. It’s about reducing over USD 3 billion in annual fuel imports through EVs powered by solar energy. It’s about efficient mobility as an economic enabler — unlocking growth and competitiveness for Sri Lanka.
We must not remain silent. This is a call to every citizen, every commuter, and every professional who values transparency, equity, and a level playing field to demand that Customs act within its mandate.
Please make your voice heard. Policy makers must listen to your voice. Krishan Balendra Duminda Hulangamuwa Harshana Nanayakkara Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma Harsha de Silva
