This is one of the traditional folk art forms in the Eastern Province among Tamils, and is widely appreciated and spoken of by the public. The art form mostly depicts poignant stories from historical epics. It is performed in the open mostly during temple festivals in the villages. It is the most popular entertainment in the rural area. The dialogue, music and dance in storytelling are delivered by performers, and they wear large, voluminous, and bright colour dresses. There are many types of Koothu art forms existing in the District. This art form is predominantly staged by males, and any female character appearing in the performance is play by males.
