ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ප්‍රසව හා පශ්චාත් ප්‍රසව විෂාදය සඳහා වූ ප්‍රජා මූලික මාතෘ මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය වැඩසටහනක ශක්‍යතාව, පිළිගැනීම සහ මූලික ප්‍රතිඵල තක්සේරු කිරීම තේමා කරගත් සුවිශේෂී ප්‍රජා මූලික නියමු ව්‍යාපෘතියක් පසුගියදා (19) ගාල්ලේදී නිල වශයෙන් ආරම්භ කෙරුණි. මෙම විෂය පථයට අදාල පාර්ශ්ව කරුවන් සම්බන්ධ කර ගැනීම සහ උපදෙස් ලබා ගැනීම මම හමුවේ මුලික අරමුණ විය

මෙම ව්‍යාපෘතිය සංවිධානය කරනු ලබන්නේ සෞඛ්‍ය සහ සමාජ සත්කාර පිළිබඳ පර්යේෂණ සහ සංවර්ධන ආයතනය විසිනි. ඒ සඳහා මූල්‍ය දායකත්වය සපයනු ලබන්නේ ඕස්ට්‍රේලියානු රජයේ කොළඹ සෘජු ආධාර වැඩසටහන මඟිනි.

මෙරට මව්වරුන් පස්දෙනෙකුගෙන් එක් අයෙකුටම බලපාන මාතෘ විෂාදය හේතුවෙන් මවට සහ දරුවාට සිදුවන අහිතකර බලපෑම් අවම කිරීම සඳහා සාක්ෂි මත පදනම් වූ විසඳුම් සෙවීම මෙම නියමු අධ්‍යයනයේ ප්‍රධාන අරමුණයි.

මෙම නියමු ව්‍යාපෘතිය යටතේ ප්‍රජා මට්ටමින් ක්‍රියාත්මක වන පවුල් සෞඛ්‍ය සේවා නිලධාරිනියන් විශේෂ පුහුණුවකට ලක් කරනු ලබයි. එමඟින් මව්වරුන්ගේ මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය කළමනාකරණය සඳහා වූ 'සුවපත් සිතුවිලි' (Thinking Healthy Program) වැඩසටහන වඩාත් ඵලදායී ලෙස බිම් මට්ටමින් ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීමට අපේක්ෂිතය.

දකුණු පළාත් ආණ්ඩුකාර, මහාචාර්ය සුසිරිපාල මානවඩු මහතාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් පැවැත්වුණු මෙම සමාරම්භක උත්සවය සඳහා සෞඛ්‍ය, පරිපාලන සහ විශ්වවිද්‍යාල ක්ෂේත්‍රවල විද්වතුන් සහ ප්‍රවීණයන් රැසක් සහභාගී වූහ.

සෞඛ්‍ය සහ සමාජ සත්කාර පිළිබඳ පර්යේෂණ සහ සංවර්ධන ආයතනය (IRD)

A unique community-based pilot programme titled “Assessing the Feasibility, Acceptability and Preliminary Outcomes of a Community-Based Maternal Mental Health Programme for Antenatal and Postnatal Depression in Sri Lanka” was officially launched in Galle on the 19th. The primary objective of the inaugural stakeholder meeting was to engage relevant stakeholders and obtain their expert guidance and recommendations.

The project is being implemented by the Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD) and is funded through the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program (DAP) in Colombo.

The main aim of this pilot study is to identify evidence-based solutions to reduce the adverse effects of maternal depression, a condition that affects approximately one in five mothers in Sri Lanka and has significant consequences for both mothers and their children.

As part of the pilot project, Public Health Midwives (PHMs) working at the community level will receive specialised training. This will facilitate the more effective implementation of the “Thinking Healthy Programme”, an intervention designed to support the management of maternal mental health at the grassroots level.

The inaugural event was held under the patronage of Professor Susiripala Manawaduwa, Governor of the Southern Province, and was attended by a distinguished gathering of experts and professionals from the health, administrative, and academic sectors.

The latest cohort of Behaviour Therapy Theory Programme students has successfully completed the theory component of their training in Sri Lanka.

Applied Behaviour Analysis is widely recognised as one of the most evidence based approaches for supporting children with autism. It is implemented by trained behaviour therapists, where professional standards, certification, and regulation are critical to ensuring ethical and effective practice.

In 2020, Dr Anton James introduced certified and regulated behaviour therapy to Sri Lanka through The Tree House International, aligning the field with international standards through collaboration with the International Behaviour Analysis Organisation.

The recent graduation marks an important step in this journey, as students progress towards becoming qualified behaviour therapists under a structured and regulated pathway. The event was attended by Chief Guest Prof Sumathipala and Dr Jayaseelan, Dr Shafeek, Dr Samaraweera, Ms Peiris, and Ms Lasanthika Madushani as distinguished guests.

This milestone strengthens professional standards and expands access to quality, evidence based support services across the country.

IRD was pleased to participate in the Brainstorming Session on Streamlining the Regulatory and Approval Processes for Clinical Trials Conducted in Sri Lanka, held on 24 April 2026 at the SLMA Auditorium and organized by the Sri Lanka Clinical Trials Registry (SLCTR).
Representing IRD, Prof. Sumathipala and the team joined stakeholders in discussions on reducing barriers, improving efficiency, and strengthening the approval pathway for clinical research in Sri Lanka. He also representing his role as the Chairman of the Committee on Ethics, Governance and Research integrity emphasized how the Committee can facilitate these processes.
The highly productive meeting was led by SLCTR’s chairperson, Prof. Udaya Ranawaka and enabled valuable exchanges among key stakeholders. Such collaborative discussions are vital to advancing a more supportive environment for high-quality research.
The meeting was attended by Dr Suranga Dolamulla, DDG Education, Training and Research at the Ministry of Health and its Director of Research Dr Devani Ranaweera, Chairman NSF Dr Sudath Samaraweera, Chairman NRC Prof Anuji Gamage, Dr Ananada Wijewickrama Chairman MRNA, many active clinical trialists.
