Happy New Year from SOLORICON, The Caribbean Climate Justice Project and Youth IRIE. Here’s to a productive, successful and fulfilling 2025, pursuing the initiatives and supporting the causes that matter to us.

My first encounter with Todd was in Warsaw in 2013 during the contentious negotiations at COP 19 that eventually gave us the Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and Damage. Two of the photos show the intense huddle that formed as we tried desperately to save loss and damage from being kicked down the road to COP 20, without any progress.

I decided after that COP that it made more sense to develop a working relationship with President Barack Obama's Special Envoy for Climate Change, Todd Stern, than to treat him as an adversary, constantly butting heads over the critical issues that divided our countries and negotiating blocs.

This relationship proved particularly useful on the road to Paris in 2015. Todd and I met several times, often with my Marshall Islands colleague the late Tony De Brum, the then Minister for Foreign Affairs, as we committed to work together to achieve an ambitious Paris Agreement.

That cooperation allowed us to get US support for 1.5 degrees Celsius as the long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement, a historic achievement, and also for the separate treatment of Loss and Damage (Article 8) in the Paris Agreement, an equally monumental accomplishment.

Todd and I became friends, as can be seen in one of the pics below, which was taken in Bonn a few years after we had left our respective positions, and some of our encounters on the road to Paris are captured in his recently published book - Landing the Paris Climate Agreement, which is available on Amazon.

Yeah, I know, I really need to start back working on publishing my recollection of the great work of Caribbean Small Island Developing States in landing the Paris Agreement
