Es-Sob7iyyeh – el-3aSruniyyeh
الصُّبحيّة - العَصرونيّة
Morning gathering – Tea time

Sob7iyyeh and 3aSruniyyeh are two daily rituals in Lebanese social life. صُبحيّة comes from صُبُح, morning time. And عَصرونيّة comes from عَصر, mid-afternoon. These Levantine terms describe times for friends’ gatherings. Sob7iyyeh refers mainly to ladies gathering for a morning chat around a cup of coffee. 3aSruniyyeh describes a time where more people and kids can be gathered. It invites to a beverage, savory finger food or sweet biscuits. In English, I would think of tea-time.

بُكرا الصُبحيّة عندي! – Tomorrow the Sob7iyyeh is at my place!

El balad 3ala kaff 3afriit
البلد على كَفّ عفريت
The country is about to explode (or implode)

“kaff” has many meanings: it can be the palm of the hand, it can be a slap on the face, it can also be a glove… it can even refer to an electronic part in an engine or gear! The plural in Levantine is: “kfuuf”.

In this expression “كَفّ” means “palm of the hand” and “عَفريت” means a demon. It means the country is on the devil’s palm, about to implode. Something you can hear a lot these days in our region!

Will soon be back! If interested in Arabic classes, join Albi in Mar Mikhael or online.

“Ma-fii duumary bish-shawaari3”
ما في دومَري بالشّوارع
This expression comes to the Levantine dialect from the time of the Ottoman Empire. In Turkish dialect, the “duumary” was the man in charge of lighting the oil lamps in the streets. You would see one in every neighborhood. His silhouette, with his tool to light the lamps, would be recognizable, familiar and reassuring.

Not having a دومري in the streets meant that the streets were empty and dark.

Nowadays, in Levantine dialect, we use this expression to say: there’s not a devil in sight! Or, in French: “Il n’y a pas un chat!”

"El-baSleh-l-ma7ruu2ah" or the burning onion.

محروقة بَصلِتكُن محروقة – بَصِلتِك محروقة
This is a familiar Levantine expression to tell someone that they’re rushing things too much, that they’re so eager that they’re burning some essential steps in the process that they want to achieve. It can be used with all the possessive pronouns.

Example:
ما تكونو بَصلِتكُن محروقة. فَكّرو بِكلّ المراحِل وكتبوهن.
Meaning: Don’t rush the process, don’t be too eager- (don’t be burning your onion). Think of all the steps and write them down.

"7abel El Kezeb Asiir" is the literal translation of "The rope of lies is too short" This Lebanese proverb means that there is no such thing as an ever-lasting lie. Eventually, the truth will reveal itself no matter what.
Have you ever heard of this proverb?
