HRC Praises Progress at Poinciana Mental Health Facility

On 9 June, members of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) visited the Poinciana Mental Health Facility and were impressed by the significant progress made since its opening.

The award-winning facility, recognised with the 2025 Global Architecture Award for Best Mental Health Design Facility, provides a therapeutic environment focused on psychosocial rehabilitation, independence, and recovery.

Poinciana currently supports 20 residents with a dedicated team of 55 staff and offers amenities including arts and crafts, a gym, computer stations, and vocational opportunities for residents.

While commissioners praised Poinciana as a major advancement in Cayman’s mental health services, they also highlighted the need for dedicated juvenile and forensic mental health facilities, as well as sustainable funding to support future growth and service expansion.

The visit highlighted both the remarkable achievements of Poinciana and the ongoing commitment required to strengthen mental health care across the Cayman Islands.

This Monday, we proudly celebrate Discovery Day—a moment to reflect on the rich history, heritage, and culture that shape our beautiful Cayman Islands. From the stories of our past to the vibrant community we enjoy today, this day reminds us of how far we’ve come and the values that continue to unite us.

As we take in the beauty of our islands—our crystal-clear waters, warm sunshine, and strong sense of community—let’s also honour the resilience, traditions, and contributions of those who came before us. Their legacy lives on in the Cayman we know and love today. 🌴💙

Whether you’re spending the day with family, enjoying local events, or simply soaking up island life, take a moment to appreciate all that makes Cayman truly special.

Wishing everyone a safe, joyful, and meaningful Discovery Day! 🇰🇾

We were delighted to visit Theoline L. McCoy Primary School yesterday to deliver a presentation on human rights to the students. The students were enthusiastic and enjoyed participating in discussions around this important topic – we enjoyed presenting to them and engaging in discussion with them and answering their questions on the subject. Thank you for having us, Theoline L. McCoy. It was a pleasure!

If you would like to take the opportunity to collaborate with the Human Rights Commission on educational opportunities, you can reach out to us to book a presentation by the HRC for your classroom, email [email protected] or call +1 (345) 244-3685.

On World Autism Awareness Day, the Cayman Islands Human Rights Commission stands in solidarity with persons on the autism spectrum and their families across the Cayman Islands.

Today, we celebrate neurodiversity, promote understanding, and reaffirm our commitment to dignity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. Every individual has the right to be respected, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Let’s continue working together to build a more inclusive Cayman — where human rights are protected and everyone belongs. 💙
