Our Kirk Freeport Accounts team joined in with Meals on Wheels Cayman Islands’ Seniors Rock Dress Down Day, wearing their shirts in support of Cayman’s seniors.

The annual initiative brings businesses, schools and the wider community together to raise funds and awareness for Meals on Wheels and the seniors they serve across Grand Cayman.

The most renowned of the “useful complications” is the Annual Calendar, invented and patented by Patek Philippe. Introduced 30 years ago, this mechanism provides an ingenious answer to the problem of date display. Launched in 1996, Ref. 5035 was the first model, powered by the self-winding caliber 315 S IRM QA LU, and it quickly evolved beyond its original format. Subsequent references combined the complication with moon phases and power-reserve indications, while new case and bracelet executions expanded its aesthetic range.

The Gondolo Calendario Ref. 5135, introduced in 2004, brought the Annual Calendar into a distinctive tonneau-shaped case, equipped with the caliber 324 S QA LU 24, demonstrating how the mechanism could adapt to very different design languages.
The Annual Calendar’s ability to combine practical functionality with varied expressions would become a defining characteristic of its evolution.

Underwater architecture. The Deepsea fully illustrates the innovative ability of Rolex. At its launch, this deep-sea divers’ watch, waterproof to a depth of 3,900m/12,800ft, inaugurated the Ringlock system – a unique case architecture that allows it to withstand the pressure exerted at this extreme depth.

In the darkness of the depths. To counter the total obscurity that reigns over the depths of the oceans, the blue lacquer dial of the Deepsea features the Chromalight display. This display uses an exclusive luminescent material that makes it easy to read the time in any environment.

At the heart of the Annual Calendar Ref. 5035 is the self-winding caliber 315 S QA, featuring the world's first annual calendar mechanism, patented on March 1, 1996. Bridging the gap between simple and perpetual calendars, this almost entirely rotary movement uses a series of low maintenance wheels and pinions instead of delicate cams and springs.

To automatically adjust for 30- and 31-day months, engineers added two superimposed 'finger' pieces to a central 24-hour wheel to control the date advances. Developed using plexiglass models to test the mechanism, this groundbreaking caliber requires manual correction just once a year – on March 1st.

The Deepsea artfully combines 18ct yellow gold and shades of blue. The compression ring is made from blue ceramic, a technical innovation that marked a new way of integrating this material into the watch case. The helium escape valve, which works to protect the integrity of the watch during decompression, is manufactured in RLX titanium.
