Today and every 22 March is , a global day of water awareness established by the United Nations to serve as a reminder that water is a basic human right and is a "crucial link between the climate system, human society and the environment."
World Water Day supports the achievement of the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. The theme for this year is "Water for Peace" and a reminder that without proper water governance, there is "likely to be increased competition for water between sectors and an escalation of water crises of various kinds, triggering emergencies in a range of water-dependent sectors."
In the link below, discover a series of important facts about water and how it affects food, energy, agriculture, sustainable development, climate change and more.

What is a "de-influencer" and how can this TikTok trend help our environment?
A de-influencer is actually an influencer, but rather than encouraging their social media followers to purchase products, as many influencers do, they challenge them to buy less in order to save money while considering the effects of materialism on our environment. An aim of this emerging trend is to spread awareness about the harm of overconsumption and the cost of waste associated with the beauty and fashion industries.
In a recent NPR podcast, sustainability expert Solitaire Townsend explores de-influencing and the important connection between saving money and saving our planet. In the link below, read the transcript or listen to the seven-minute podcast.

Could a small shift in our diet offset global coal emissions?
The answer is explored by researchers who are making the case that consuming less meat and dairy could free up land, currently used by livestock, to grow crops. Using a process called bioenergy, quick-growing crops can be turned into clean electricity and help remove carbon from the atmosphere. Read the full article and learn more about bioenergy in the link below.

Shopping for local produce can help save the planet.
No, really - by buying locally grown food you can reduce your carbon footprint by minimising the distance that food travels from farm to table. Less fuel consumption equals fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
Commercial farms deplete nutrients from soil, rendering it unusable. By supporting local farmers, you are helping to preserve farmland and the critical rotation of crops by the seasons, rather than overreliance on destructive monocultures.
Your taste buds also stand to benefit - local produce is fresher and more nutritious than food that has been transported long distances. So next time you're grocery shopping, purchase local where possible or visit the Camana Bay Farmers & Artisans Market.
