Workability Test Of Fresh Concrete & Slump Values
A slump test is a simple on-site method used to check the workability (consistency) of fresh concrete.
🔹 Purpose
It tells how easily concrete can be mixed, placed, and compacted.
🔹 Basic Procedure
Place the slump cone on a flat surface
Fill it with concrete in 3 layers
Compact each layer with 25 rod strokes
Level the top surface
Lift the cone vertically
Measure how much the concrete slumps (subsides)
🔹 Result
The drop in height (in mm) = Slump value
🔹 Typical Slump Range
0–25 mm → Very stiff (road work)
25–100 mm → Medium (beams, slabs)
100–150 mm → High (columns, pumped concrete)
🔹 Importance
Ensures proper mix quality
Prevents segregation & honeycombing
Helps maintain strength and durability

The slump test is a simple method to measure the workability and consistency of fresh concrete.
Procedure (brief):
Concrete is placed in a cone (slump cone) in 3 layers, each tamped. The cone is lifted vertically, and the concrete subsides. The slump value (mm) is the difference in height before and after removal.
Types of Slump:
True Slump – Concrete settles evenly → good workability (ideal condition).
Shear Slump – One side slips → lack of cohesion, poor mix.
Collapse Slump – Concrete collapses completely → too much water (very wet mix).
Zero Slump – No change in height → very stiff/dry mix.
Typical Slump Range:
0–25 mm → Low workability
25–75 mm → Medium workability
75–150 mm → High workability
Purpose:
Ensures proper mix quality for safe and durable construction.
