Together with our partners CARE Zambia and IDinsight Zambia, weโre excited to have launched the ๐๐๐ ๐ฝ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ฒ of our Market-Based Sanitation project, a key step toward co-creating sanitation solutions that are both contextual and sustainable.
This Human-Centered Design phase will help identify what people value most in sanitation products and services, providing insights that will contribute to the design of a scalable and lean market-based sanitation model under the CARE, iDE, and IDinsight partnership.
Over the past week, our teams conducted ๐๐๐ผ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ต๐ผ๐น๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ in ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ผ๐บ๐ผ and ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฒ, bringing together district officials, community development officers, WASH committee members, and local leaders to better understand the sanitation landscape.
These conversations are helping us unpack community realities, from financing mechanisms and behavioral insights to the opportunities that lie in local entrepreneurship. By listening first, we aim to design products and systems that fit the daily lives of the people who will use them.

It goes beyond simply including them; it means actively engaging women as co-designers in a process that addresses their unique needs, priorities, and challenges.
We're excited to share a major project in the works: a new women-centered design toolkit. This resource will feature a collection of research and design tools specifically created and tailored to help us better understand the experiences of women and design transformative solutions.
We've recently tested and adapted some of these tools in Ethiopia and Nepal, gathering crucial feedback to ensure they are easy to facilitate, culturally appropriate, and, most importantly, effective.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting journey, including the official rollout of the WCD toolkit!

Designing for Impact: A Human-Centered Approach to Maternal Nutrition.
At the ๐ถ๐๐ ๐๐ป๐ป๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป lab, we are often supporting iDEโs country offices to explore and understand how we can empower entrepreneurs to create impact in novel sectors and market ecosystems. Once that is done, we can begin to ideate possible products and services, and the business models which may be
This is exactly the research process that the iDE Innovation lab team has been conducting, in collaboration with the SHE by iDE team for the Working in the Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MICYN) sector, the team has been trying to understand what they key issues are that impact nutrition, especially for mothers and babies in the first 1000 days of life, a crucial window which establishes the foundations for a childโs future.
This information will help us to work with entrepreneurs, healthcare workers and other key actors to deliver sustained behavior change, in relation to exclusive breastfeeding and high quality complementary feeding for working mothers, mainly women garment factory workers.
To help us understand the sector, weโve been hard at work conducting feminist action research, with a focus on mapping out womenโs health and nutrition journeys in the first 1000 days of their childโs life. As such, weโve spoken with women to understand their care work responsibilities and how this impacts their other priorities in life. We also spoke with their mothers, husbands, health care providers and maternity product and service providers to holistically map out the journeys of these women, and identify needs which the market currently does not address.
Once weโve addressed these unmet needs, we ideate potential products and services and use a participatory and visual approach to test the potential of these service models with potential end-users and with the suppliers who may play a role in providing these services.
This is a small puzzle piece in the process we undertake when we are attempting to create impact by empowering entrepreneurs at the last mile! How do you apply Human Centered Design? How do you embed women-centered approaches to your work to create inclusive services?

invited to share the story of our clean water program in Cambodia, which took 10 years to successfully become a profitable social enterprise . The two biggest factors behind its success were a human-centered market-based approach and a revenue model that included carbon credits.
