Tadao Ando: The Geometry of human space

This book is a summary of Tadao Ando’s life, philosophy, and works. It started off with a biography of Ando and discussed how his unique life experiences shaped him into the famous self-taught architect we all have known today. The book further discussed the personality of his architecture which most of the time provoke a sense of curiosity and mystery through simple geometry forms and “naked materials”. This led the discussion to 3 recurring themes throughout his works: “The Geometry of Walls”, “The Geometry of the Sky” & “The Aesthetics of Absence”.

Ando’s philosophy is then further analyzed through 20 of his most iconic works from residential projects including ‘Koshino House’ to cultural projects such as ‘Komyo-ji Temple’.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Building for Democracy

This book is a summary of Frank Lloyd Wright’s biography, philosophy, and works throughout his life. In the introduction of this book, the author walked us through Wright’s early days with his first client and the design thinking he had. For instance, his association of horizontal lines, the low proportion associated with the ground, broad overhangs, and the role of nature in architecture characterized his early domestic architecture. Additionally, it also shows how the Industrial Revolution played a role in Wright’s career as an architect whose mission was to create a more ‘humane’ architecture.

Afterward, 37 of Frank Lloyd Wright’s projects such as the ‘Robie House’ & ‘Johnson Building’ are discussed to further understand his design philosophy.
