The County Government is piloting an ambitious Eye Health Programme aimed at increasing access to eye care services to atleast 40% of the County population through strengthened primary healthcare systems, community awareness, and early screening interventions.

Supported by Lwala Community Alliance, the Council of Governors, and the Livelihood Impact Fund, the initiative is investing in capacity building across all levels of care. Members of the County Health Management Team have been trained as Trainers of Trainers (TOTs), with ongoing training targeting Sub-County Health Management Teams, facility healthcare workers, Community Health Assistants (CHAs), and about 3,000 Community Health Promoters (CHPs).

Recognizing that lack of awareness remains the biggest barrier to seeking eye care, the programme is prioritizing community sensitization, advocacy, and education on eye health and near-vision presbyopia to generate demand. Reading glasses will be provided to those in need, while complicated cases will be referred for specialized care by ophthalmologists and optometrists.

This initiative seeks to bring eye care closer to our communities.

Rachuonyo East Sub-County Hospital is scaling new heights in healthcare delivery.

The Level 4 facility has become a centre of excellence in skilled birth attendance. Mothers and newborns receive quality, safe care at the most critical moments of life.

As an integral part of Homa Bay County’s push for zero maternal, neonatal, and perinatal deaths, the hospital is turning that vision into reality — one safe delivery at a time.

Through strategic investments, dedicated healthcare workers, strengthened systems, and a commitment to quality care, Rachuonyo East is safeguarding lives and giving every mother and child a healthier start.

The County Government of Homa Bay has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bright Dada CBO to improve lighting systems in 25 health facilities across the county through the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting.

Reliable lighting is critical for the delivery of quality healthcare services, particularly in maternal and newborn care, emergency response, and night-time medical procedures. The initiative will enhance visibility, improve safety for patients and healthcare workers, reduce energy consumption, and create a more conducive environment for healthcare delivery.

This partnership reflects our commitment to investing in sustainable solutions that strengthen health systems, improve patient outcomes, and accelerate the realization of Universal Health Coverage for all residents of Homa Bay County.
