Happy Labor day! Today we reflect on this year’s International Girls in ICT Day, themed “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future,” participants moved beyond theory into innovation by designing a simple web-based AI assistant addressing real community challenges in agriculture. Working in teams, the girls identified local farming needs such as pest management, crop timing, and market access and used guided prompts to build an AI tool capable of generating practical, locally relevant advice. In the process, they not only gained foundational skills in AI design and problem-solving but also applied key cybersecurity principles, including responsible data use, privacy awareness, and safe digital practices when handling user inputs. By the end of the session, the girls had successfully developed and demonstrated functional prototypes, showing how accessible technologies can be leveraged to create impactful, community-driven solutions while remaining secure and ethical in the digital space.

Flash back to when we were part of a convening that highlighted a critical reality: youth make up 50–60% of Kenya’s agricultural workforce, yet over 70% remain in informal, low-paying roles.

At Mirai Tech Hub, we’re responding by shifting from production-focused interventions to ecosystem transformation leveraging mentorship, market linkages, and low-cost digital tools to support youth-led MSMEs in the avocado, mango, and potato value chains.

The goal: turn informal work into sustainable agribusiness.

In celebration of World Water Day and International Day of Forests,we engaged young learners in a meaningful day of action and learning.

1) We planted trees
2) We held an interactive session with primary school students
3) We explored the connection between forests, water, and our future

By empowering young minds with knowledge and action, we are nurturing a generation that understands the importance of sustainability, environmental conservation, and community responsibility.

We worked in collaborationwith Google to *TransformKisumu* through Digital literacy training programme that trained over 700 young people across all the wards in Kisumu County. The graduates from this course are employable, have hands on skills to create mobile apps or are ripe for start-up ventures, using their digital skills.

The aim was to challenge the perception that digital skills or jobs are only for a few. We believe that anyone with a mobile phone can improve their skills and create enterprises that help them enhance their economic prospects.

The aim of the programme was to create a network of Digital Youth Hubs across every ward in the county, which engages youth teams known as the “Barefoot Digital Youth Squad”or “Barefoot Digitali” in local slang. These young people (18-32years) embedded in local communities and trained to undertake data gathering tasks across a range of sectors – *health, education, agriculture etc*.
