In 2017, drought threatened pastoralist families in northern Kenya; acting ahead, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) invested US $90 per household to protect their herds and livelihoods. The results were striking: every dollar spent brought a direct return of nearly $3.5 – and when the avoided emergency costs were included, the benefit rose to $8.9.
