LANDMARK RULING
The High Court has officially upheld the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a historic decision delivered in Nairobi, a three-judge bench (Justices Eric Ogola, Anthony Mrima, and Fridah Mugambi) ruled that Parliament acted fully within the Constitution when removing Gachagua from office.
The court actually found that the Senate violated Gachaguaโs right to a fair hearing by refusing to adjourn the proceedings when he fell ill. Because of this constitutional breach, the court awarded him KSh 50 million in damages.
However, the judges ruled that this violation wasn't enough to overturn the entire impeachment.
The court cleared the way for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, warning that reversing the succession now would trigger a massive constitutional crisis.
โThe ruling cements the legislature's authority in impeachment processes, but sends a sharp warning that individual constitutional rights cannot be ignored.
This is a massive legal precedent for Kenya, balancing the raw power of Parliament against the fundamental right to a fair trial.
What are your thoughts on this ruling? Is KSh 50M a fair compromise for a breached right, or should the trial have been paused? Letโs talk in the comments.

NAIROBI, Kenyaย โ Treasury Cabinet Secretaryย John Mbadiย has described the 2026/2027 national budget as the most challenging financial plan he has handled, citing rising inflation and global economic disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions.
Speaking outside the Treasury Building in Nairobi while addressing the press ahead of the presentation of the Ksh. 4.84 trillion National Budget Statement before Parliament, Mbadi said the budget had been prepared amid several economic pressures, including external shocks affecting global markets.
โThere is no easy budget, this yearโs budget is even informed by a number of challenges, one of which is the external shock that we are facing. Now we have war in the Middle East and that war is completely disrupting the world economy,โ Mbadi stated.
The remarks come as the government faces scrutiny over its plan to finance a Ksh. 1.1 trillion budget deficit, with opposition leaders and sections of the public questioning the sustainability of the proposed financing strategy.
Mbadi attributed the current economic challenges to global factors, including conflict in the Strait of Hormuz involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has increased uncertainty in international energy and financial markets.
The 2026/2027 budget is expected to outline government priorities while addressing revenue collection, expenditure plans, and measures aimed at managing the

Street Families Population Drops by 60 Percent, New Census Reveals
The number of street families in Kenya has declined by more than 60 percent over the past eight years, according to the 2025 National Census for Street Families report.
The report indicates that the population of street-connected persons fell from more than 46,000 in 2018 to 18,049 in 2025, marking a significant reduction across the country.
Despite the decline, Nairobi, Nakuru and Mombasa counties continue to record the highest numbers of people living on the streets.
The census further shows that the majority of street-connected persons are male, accounting for 78.6 percent of the total population, while females make up 21.4 percent.
The findings highlight progress in efforts aimed at reducing the number of people living on the streets through rehabilitation, social protection programmes and community interventions. However, the concentration of street families in major urban centres underscores the need for continued investment in long-term solutions that address poverty, unemployment and social exclusion.
The 2025 National Census for Street Families provides updated data to guide government agencies, development partners and other stakeholders in planning interventions and policies to support the reintegration and welfare of street-connected persons.

NAIROBI, Kenyaย โ The opposition has urged Members of Parliament to reject the 2026/2027 national budget, warning that the proposed financial plan will further increase the burden on Kenyans through higher taxes and rising living costs.
The call was made yesterday in Karen during the unveiling of the oppositionโs alternative budget estimates, where leaders led byย Kalonzo Musyoka,ย Rigathi Gachagua,ย Fred Matiang'iย andย Justin Muturiย criticized the governmentโs budget proposal set for presentation before Parliament on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
Kalonzo accused the government of introducing measures that would heavily affect ordinary citizens, claiming that Kenyans were being taxed even on basic financial transactions.
โThis Ruto regime has found a way to tax the poor even when they are not buying anything, and they are taxing the movement of money itself,โ Kalonzo stated.
The governmentโs proposed budget, themedย โBottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda,โย totals Ksh. 4.82 trillion, with a projected deficit of Ksh. 1.1 trillion expected to be financed through domestic and external borrowing.
The opposition has proposed reducing the budget to Ksh. 4.318 trillion, a reduction of Ksh. 499.3 billion. Its alternative estimates placingย the opposition'sย estimated revenue at Ksh. 3.63 trillion compared to the governmentโs Ksh. 3.725 trillion projection, arguing that the target should be achieved through improved compliance rather than introducing new taxes.
The alternative budget prioritizes key sectors, including healthcare, where the opposition proposes reinstating theย Linda Mama programmeย andย Edu Afyaย initiatives.
The opposition further recommends increasing the health allocation to Ksh. 242.3 billion, addressing the Ksh. 11 billion gap in theย Social Health Authority, and cancelling the proposed Ksh. 104 billion technology allocation linked to the health system.
The leaders also called on Kenyans to reject the Finance Bill in its entirety if MPs fail to oppose the proposed budget, warning that the measures would worsen economic challenges facing citizens.

The left-back joined the Blues from Brighton for ยฃ60million in the summer of 2022 and has since become one of the best defenders in the Premier League. Following the sackings of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, though, Cucurella is now open to leaving Stamford Bridge, according to sources.
Chelsea are not actively looking to sell the Spain international, though will be willing to part ways with the left-back should the right offer arrive in their direction. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are believed to be interested in the player.
