About Mental Health Champions KE
Mental health champions KE is a community-based non-profit organization started in 2017 and dedicated to Preventing the onset of mental health problems before they occur and addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of residents in Mukuru Slums.
Our work is driven by our commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention services for all. Kenya is among the top 10 most depressed countries in Africa with people living in urban slums at a bigger risk of developing mental health conditions due to the harsh living conditions they experience.
Persons with mental disorders often have their human rights violated, as a result of stigmatization and discrimination. Many are denied economic, social and cultural rights, with restrictions on the rights to work and education, as well as reproductive rights and the right to the highest attainable standard of health. Most of them are also subjected to unhygienic and inhumane living conditions, physical and sexual abuse, neglect, as well as harmful and degrading treatment practices in health facilities.
