We are committed to fostering a community that values mental health and wellbeing.

At Basic Needs Basic Rights Kenya, we believe that every individual deserves the opportunity to meaningfully participate in community life. However, for many people with disabilities, particularly in rural Kenya, a lack of access to essential assistive technology remains a significant barrier.

Through a collaboration with CBM Kenya CBM Ireland funded by Irish Aid, we are changing this narrative by providing vital assistive devices. We believe that an assistive device is not just a tool, it is a bridge to opportunity. By equipping individuals with the right physical, sensory, and cognitive support systems, we are unlocking doors to inclusive education, community integration and ultimately, economic empowerment, as we help dismantle social isolation and reduce the stigma often faced by persons with disabilities and their caregivers.

This work aligns directly with the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025, ensuring that inclusion is treated as a fundamental human right, not an act of charity. True community resilience is built when everyone has a seat and an active voice at the table.

Are recruitment processes in your organization truly fair and transparent?

Gender inclusion is not about taking opportunities away from one group to give to another. It is about creating transparent and fair pathways where both men and women are judged solely on their skills, merit, and impact.

True gender equality benefits everyone.

What a day of pomp, excitement, and colour at Chesikaki in Bungoma County!

We are still buzzing with gratitude after an incredible celebration marking 20 Years of Impact for Basic Needs Basic Rights Kenya. Two decades ago, we started with a fundamental conviction: Mental Health is a Human Right. Celebrating this journey surrounded by the very vibrant culture, traditional dances, and energy of the community we serve made this milestone unforgettable.

This milestone does not belong to us alone. It belongs to everyone who walked this path with us:

πŸ™ To Our Founding Members: Thank you for your bold vision, courage, and dedication. You laid the groundwork 20 years ago when community mental health was barely on the global radar, transforming a simple idea into a life-changing movement. We were deeply honored to have our founders, join us in person to witness how the seed they planted has grown.

🀝 To Our Stakeholders and Partners: Thank you to our Board, staff, government representatives, funding partners, civil society organizations, and mental health advocates who showed up. Your collaborative spirit, resources, and shared belief in disability inclusion and rights-based mental health care are what make our work sustainable.

To the Community and Lived-Experience Champions: You are the true heartbeat of Basic Needs Basic Rights Kenya. Thank you to the residents of Bungoma, our tireless caregivers, and our brave mental health champions who continue to shatter stigma, share their stories, and build resilient support networks. Seeing our youth and community members lead the festivities with such joy reminds us why we do what we do.

From a registered country office in 2005 to a leading national champion for community mental health, the progress is undeniable. But as we look to the next 20 years, we know our journey is just getting started. Let us keep turning awareness into action, expanding safe spaces, and restoring dignity for all.

Thank you for celebrating with us!

As part of our continued efforts to strengthen partnerships towards media advocacy on matters mental health, Basic Needs Basic Rights Kenya partnered with the Media Council of Kenya, TikTok and other stakeholders to host a Mental Health Master Class for journalists at the Aga Khan University.

This session was meant to both support journalists’ well-being, noting the stressors they are exposed to in the course of their job, as well as conduct a training session on mental health reporting that promotes dignity, recovery and is devoid of stigma, noting the key role played by the media in shaping public perception and setting the nation's agenda.

This session provided a platform for journalists to interact with mental health experts, share their experiences, and strengthen their knowledge on basic mental health and personal safety and trauma-informed reporting.

This was in the build up to the Annual Pan - African Media Summit and Annual Media Excellence Awards 2026.
