The girl child faces the burden of unpaid care work at an early age. Parents assign the girls to kitchen duties and take care of the family while they let the boys go out to play. In some parts, it is considered taboo for boys to get in the kitchen, cook, or do the dishes.

According to a UN report, social norms were still at play during the COVID-19. 64% of parents in the 38 countries of study as of November 2020 noted a higher daughter involvement in domestic chores.
