HOW TO COMPLETELY ERADICATE STRIKES IN SCHOOLS.
By MR Sam VIDAMBU.
1. Two mid term breaks in second term.
Why do most strikes happen in second term and not third term?
There is something about second term that has not been explored fully.
Currently, first term is 12 weeks, second term is 14 weeks and third term is 9 weeks.
If the ministry of education will initiate two mid term breaks in second term i.e one in early June and one in early July, it will reduce the unrest in schools.
Reducing the length of the term will not help much, putting two breaks in the term will.
2. Phone hours.
This goes for the parents.
There is nothing wrong with buying your child a phone, but have something called phone hours.
This is part of 'Vidambu's Parenting Formula'.
From 8AM to 9AM is house chores time.
From 9AM to 9:30AM is breakfast time.
Agree with them and say from 9:30AM to 1:30PM is study time, with breaks in between.
From 1:30PM to 2PM is lunch time.
From 2PM to 3PM is outdoor time to play football, basketball or ride bicycle.
3PM to 4PM is shower time and medication together with evening walk.
At 4PM you give them the phone to use to talk to their friends.
At exactly 9PM the child hands over the phone to the parent and they will access it the following day at 4PM, and the cycle continues.
This kind of an arrangement helps to bring a culture of discipline to a child.
They grow up responsible citizens knowing everything has limitations. The child of today is addicted to social media to an extent where they can not live without a phone. That is one of the reasons why they want to go home because of phone.
3. 'Principals Cup' every fortnight, on Saturday at 2pm and principals assembly every Saturday at 7:30AM.
I have seen this working miracles in many schools. Every Saturday at exactly 7:30AM, the students assemble in the dining hall to listen to their principal. No teacher is there, no deputy is there. Just the students and their principal. The principal speaks for 20 minutes then asks the school headboy/headgirl to come and present the students' requests to him.
The Principal listens keenly then gives his say about the requests and grievances.
On the second and forth Saturday of the month, there is a tournament called 'Principals Cup'.
This tournament has three teams. The students', the teachers' and the non-teaching-staff'.
On the second Saturday of the month e.g 14th of June, from 2PM to 4PM, the teachers' team will play versus non teaching staffs' team. If non teaching staff are few you can request the 'available' board members and PA members to join.
The best 11 players will then be selected to play versus the students' team on 28th of June from 2PM to 4PM.
Find a method of awarding and congratulating to bring competition.
If the first month was football, the second month will be basketball, the next month volleyball, then athletics, and the cycle continues.
You want a way of bringing teachers and students closer to you? Here it is.
4. Lessons end by 4pm and students go for recreation thereafter.
Schools have to relook at the school routine. Some schools don't even have time for games, washing clothes and taking shower.
Imagine lessons ending at 4pm then there are two remedial lessons from 4pm to 6pm.
When the students ask for time for recreation they are told 'Create time!'.
CBE curriculum dictates that lessons must end by 3:20PM.
Let us break boredom by giving students time to relax their brains in the evening. It is healthy.
5. Topical studies and topical assessment.
Too many exams with too little time for studies and preparation for those exams is among the reasons for unrest in schools.
Instead of giving the form fours a full exam to do from 6pm to 8pm then from 8pm to 10pm, why can't you go topical?
You give them time to study a particular topic then you exhaust all possible topical KCSE questions from that topic where students do it as Topical Assessment Test (TAT).
This is one of the strategies in 'Vidambu's Content Retention Programs'.
This will reduce a huge chunk of a subject into small topics which is manageable by the students.
It also helps the teacher to know which topics are a problem to the students.
6. Introduce visiting days the first Sunday of the month.
Students strike because they miss home. They miss home because they miss people at home.
I know you'll say, 'they are adults'.
A school is not a prison, but even prisoners miss their people.
During our time in school we had visiting days the first Sunday of the month between 11am and 1:30pm.
Parents could come with food, snacks, talk to their children then leave.
No student was allowed to eat food from another family.
Also, no student was allowed to go with food to the dormitory.
If you missed your parents or siblings, you'd be sure they'd come the following Sunday, there was no urgency to cause unrest and go home.
7. Mandatory drug tests.
Sometimes you ask, can a normal person who is not under the influence of something burn where they sleep?
Drug tests should be mandatory in schools. Sniffer dogs should roam in schools once in a while.
8. Cctv cameras to be installed outside the dorm and be monitored 24 hours by the security.
This is in case of any emergency.
In many schools, the cctv monitors are in the principal’s office but the watchmen are in the dark.
9. More dormitories construction.
Some dorms are not conducive. They are overcrowded to an extend where a student has no space to breath.
Ministry/PA should construct more dorms.
10. Guidance and Counselling department to be empowered.
Guidance and counselling is not proactive like it used to be during our time.
HoD G&c used to be the most respected HoD. Nowadays, HoD G&C just waits to hear about lezbianizm or drug abuse that is when they find work to do and someone to advice.
G&c department should be revived and empowered to do its work without interference.

EFFECTS OF STRIKES TO FORM THREE STUDENTS.
By MR Sam VIDAMBU.
If you are a parent and you have a child in form three 2026, kindly read this to the end and forward to other parents.
This is important:
1. The Repeating factor.
8-4-4 system started in 1985 to replace 7-4-2-3. The last class of 8-4-4 is now in form three.
They will do their KCSE in 2027. Being the last group in 8-4-4, they will not be able to repeat form four and redo KCSE.
There is no way a form four student who did KCSE exam will go back to grade 12 to do the KCBE assessment.
It will be impossible.
This means that the current form three students should be the most determined to ensure they have adequate time in school keeping in mind that they only have one shot, there is no reverse gear and there are no two ways about it.
Form threes should yern to be at school more so that they can have more contact hours with teachers in school to clear syllabus on time, to retain the content well and prepare for the KCSE exam.
2. The Job factor.
There is a reason why 8-4-4 system is called 8, 4, 4.
8 years for primary school, 4 years for high school and 4 years for university.
CBE was introduced in 2017 December. The other name for CBE is 2:6:3:3:3.
2 years for PP1 and PP2. 6 years for primary school. 3 years for junior school. 3 years for senior school. 3 years for university/tertiary education.
The form three students have 6 years to graduation i.e form three + form four + year 1 + year two + year 3 + year 4.
The grade 10 students students have 6 years to graduation i.e grade 10 + grade 11 + grade 12 + year 1 + year 2 + year 3.
This means, if all factors are held constant, form threes and grade 10s with be released to the job market the same year.
This will be advantageous to the first CBE class and disadvantageous to the last 8-4-4 class.
Everyone believe that CBE is more practical than 8-4-4 and so the employers will want to see the practical aspect of CBE graduates at the work place.
I am not scaring the form threes, I am spitting facts. Six years from today, the employer will be reluctant to hire 8-4-4 graduates. They will wait for the CBE graduates because they believe they are holistic, focused on 21st century competences and have personalized learning pathways.
Someone said 'new is always better'.
What will make the employer hire the 8-4-4 graduate and not the CBE graduate?
You must have done extremely well in class and have the best papers.
How can you focus and do well in class when you are thinking about burning the dormitory?
3. The Election factor.
10th of August 2027, from 6AM to 5PM Kenyans will participate in general elections.
They will vote for president, governor, senator, woman rep, member of parliament and member of county assembly.
The Ministry of education, under the able CS, Waziri Julius Ogamba Migosi stated that from 2027 academic year each term will have the same length. This most likely means that term one will run for 12 weeks, term two 12 weeks then term three 11 weeks.
Since time immemorial, calendar year has 35 weeks.
Schools are used as poling stations. This should be a concern to the current form threes.
In 2027, second term might be disrupted and shortened due to the general elections.
See, IEBC field officers, temporary officials, returning officers and clerks always undergo decentralized cluster level operational training at designated local schools where poling will be done.
This means that schools might have to close second term early to pave way for IEBC training and preparations for the general elections. This will affect students' preparation for KCSE because they will be at home at a time when they should be at school.
Constitution of Kenya 2010, Article 138, Clause 4 and 5 states this:
(4) A candidate shall be declared elected as President if the candidate receives--
(a) more than half of all the votes cast in the election; and
(b) at least twenty-five per cent of the votes cast in each of more than half of the counties.
(5) If no candidate is elected, a fresh election shall be held within thirty days after the previous election and in that fresh election the only candidates shall be--
(a) the candidate, or the candidates, who received the greatest number of votes; and
(b) the candidate, or the candidates, who received the second greatest number of votes.
This should be a concern to the current form threes because if no presidential winner is announced the first round it means we must go to vote again after 30 days. This is what we call runoff, ballotage or two round system.
30 days after 10th of August 2027 will be Tuesday 9th of September 2027.
Remember, third term is supposed to begin the last week of August in 2027.
Again, because schools are used as poling stations, term three 2027 will be shortened. For any KCSE student, form four term three is the most critical term because students are preparing for their final exams.
For those of us who were there in 1992 and 2007/2008, we pray that whatever happened DOES NOT repeat itself in 2027 because it will affect the KCSE candidates in the worst possible way.
From admission in form one to when KCSE starts in form four, students are supposed to have 140 weeks in school.
Imagine this scenario;
A student lost two weeks in form one term two due to nationwide floods, lost another one week in form one term two due to unrest in their school, the student lost one week in form one term three due to teachers' industrial action in 2024, the same student lost two weeks in form two term two due to strikes, they lost two weeks in form three term two due to strikes, lost one week in form four term two due to strike, they lost two weeks in form four term two due to IEBC training in their school, they lost three weeks in form four term three because of runoff.
In total, the student lost close to 15 weeks out of school due to strike, unrest and tension in school. 15 weeks which could have been used for syllabus coverage and content retention.
To all form threes in 2026, as your uncle, I beseech you, don't burn your dorm, don’t cause chaos in your school. In any society, there are challenges, but there are better ways of getting solutions rather than burning, cursing and destroying. Stay more in school. Be close to your teachers. Pray for our country Kenya. Pray that 2027 presidential elections are peaceful and it ends in the first round so that we do not go for a runoff.
Winston Churchill said 'Pessimists see difficulties in every opportunity and optimists see opportunities in every difficulty'. Remember, success happens when preparation meets opportunity.
Win today, win tomorrow, win everyday.

IF YOUR CHILD HAS COME HOME DUE TO STRIKE, READ THIS👇🏾.
If your kids have come home after being sent home due to unrest in their school, don't be nice to them. Do not baby them. They will continue with that behaviour of getting whatever they want.
Withdraw the benefits and inject the work. Take away that phone, disconnect the TV and do not pay for the wifi. Give the house help a short break.
Tell them to wash their clothes, prepare their bed, organise their room and even get to the kitchen.
If you are a business person, you should alternate them so they come with you and be the errand boy or girl and learn on the job.
Let them see life from a different angle. They think that life is a walk in the park. Life is not a bed of roses.
Give them some task. Tell them to help the plumber in fixing the shower. Tell them to work on their ego, their commitment and consistency.
Tell them that the pocket money you will give them will be determined by their level of discipline and respect.
Tell them that every thing is earned. Remind them that you will not give them anything for free until you see a better son and better daughter.
Remind them that if you do not correct their mibehaviors right now, then the judge will correct it in the court of law few years from today.
Remind them not all spirits are casted out by prayers, some need flogging, whipping and thrashing.
John 2:13-17.. 'at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and money changers sitting at tables. He made a whip out of cords and drove all of them from the temple courts, scattered the coins and overturned the tables'.
Praying for your kid to behave well is good but giving them a few strokes when they misbehave is better.
Tell them that discipline is not child abuse but proper parenting.
