Techwin Limited has successfully delivered the Solarized Toniok Borehole & Water Tower Project in Perkerra Ward, Baringo County, transforming an existing diesel-powered borehole into a modern solar-powered water supply system that is now providing reliable access to clean water for more than 500 households, as well as nearby schools and health facilities.

The project was officially commissioned on 28 July 2026 by H.E. Ambassador Henk Jan Bakker of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya and H.E. Benjamin Cheboi of Baringo County Government, under the Catchment to Tap (C2T) Programme, an initiative implemented in partnership with WWF-Kenya, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya, the County Government of Baringo County Government, and other water sector partners.

For years, the Toniok community relied on a diesel-powered borehole that was expensive to operate and vulnerable to frequent breakdowns. Whenever fuel became unavailable or the pumping system failed, water supply was interrupted, forcing many families to travel long distances in search of clean water. These disruptions affected households, schools, healthcare facilities, and agricultural activities that depended on a reliable source of water.

As the engineering contractor, Techwin Limited delivered the complete solarization of the borehole, including the installation of a high-efficiency solar pumping system, construction of a 9-metre-high elevated steel water tower, installation of two 10,000-litre water storage tanks with a combined storage capacity of 20,000 litres, and integration of the associated mechanical, structural, and water distribution infrastructure. The project also supported the establishment of a community management committee to oversee the long-term operation and maintenance of the system.

The completed project is already transforming daily life within the community. Women and girls who previously spent hours collecting water now have easier access to a dependable supply closer to their homes. Children are able to spend more time in school, while households can dedicate more time to farming, livestock keeping, and other income-generating activities. Schools and healthcare facilities also benefit from a consistent supply of clean water, improving sanitation, hygiene, and essential public services.

Beyond improving access to water, the project demonstrates why solarization is becoming the preferred solution for rural water infrastructure. By replacing diesel with solar energy, the system eliminates fuel dependency, significantly reduces operating and maintenance costs, lowers carbon emissions, and provides a more reliable water supply. The reduced cost of operation also makes the project more financially sustainable for the community over the long term.

The Solarized Toniok Borehole & Water Tower Project highlights how engineering, renewable energy, and strategic partnerships can work together to strengthen water security, improve livelihoods, and build resilient communities.
