Reparations Friday:
HAPPENING TODAY | International Media Briefing

Today, we bring together voices from Africa and Brazil to launch an international petition calling for reparative justice in education.

The petition is rooted in the lived experiences of African and Afro-Brazilian students who continue to face the enduring effects of slavery, colonialism, and systemic racism in educational spaces. It is a call for institutions and governments to move beyond acknowledgement and commit to meaningful change.

Join students, educators, journalists, policymakers, civil society, and reparations advocates as we discuss why educational justice is an essential part of reparative justice.

Did you know?

The modern African reparations movement was organized, articulated, and championed decades ago through the Abuja Reparations Proclamation and broader Pan-African mobilization.

Its message remains as urgent today as it was then:

Africa’s challenges did not emerge in a vacuum. Slavery, colonialism, and centuries of extraction left behind structures that continue to shape our borders, economies, migration patterns, and development pathways.

Reparations does not merely mean confronting the past, but the enduring consequences of historical injustice and building a future grounded in dignity, equity, and self-determination.

As we imagine a Borderless Africa, we must ask ourselves:

If colonialism divided us, shouldn’t justice unite us?

We are attending the high-level consultative conference on the Next Steps after the landmark UN resolution A/RES/80/250 declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement of Africa s as the Gravest Crimes Against Humanity.

Over the past three days,, a new history is being written in Accra.

The Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice has seen leaders and delegates from more than 80 nations unified in Ghana to transform the resolution into concrete action.

Some powerful conversations ranging from cultural artifact restitution at Christiansborg Castle to drafting frameworks for international justice commissions, the momentum for systemic change has never been stronger.

We shall be sharing key summit highlights and outline next advocacy steps.

NEXT STEPS CONFERENCE 2026 || DAY 1 || 18.06.26 || 18/06/2026

Africans Rising is in Accra, Ghana participating in the High-Level Consultative Conference on the Next Steps to the landmark UN General Assembly resolution of 25 March 2026, which recognizes the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement as a crime against humanity and advances global pathways for reparatory justice, restitution, and accountability.

The conference brings together Heads of State and Government from Africa and the diaspora, the African Union, the United Nations, academia, experts, civil society, and social movements to shape practical frameworks for implementation. ECOSOCC is present as the AU’s civil society organ, ensuring civil society perspectives are embedded in discussions on coordination mechanisms, accountability, and post-resolution action.

If you are not in Accra, you can still follow this historic process and be part of the conversations shaping reparations going forward. Follow the livestream through the link below and stay engaged.

Returning home is often the first act of remembrance. For Africans in the diaspora, walking the lands their ancestors once knew, hearing the languages that survived bo***ge, and standing before sites of enslavement and resistance is more than heritage tourism—it is the beginning of historical memory.

Reparative justice starts with remembrance. Before repair comes recognition; before restitution comes reconnection. To see the faces, cultures, and communities that mirror one’s ancestors is to reclaim a history that slavery and colonialism sought to erase. It is a powerful act of restoring identity, dignity, and belonging.

The journey back home is therefore not the end goal—it is the first step in a longer struggle for truth, justice, and the healing of historical wounds.

: The global reparations movement has made strides in recognizing the Transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity. But as Eunice Odhiambo (), Reparations Officer at Africans Rising, reminds us, this is only part of the story. Millions of Africans were also trafficked through the Trans‑Saharan, Indian Ocean, and Portuguese‑dominated routes, with devastating impacts that remain largely invisible today.

Why does it matter?

The Cost of Silence
When these histories are neglected, communities like the Siddis in India/Pakistan, the Zanj descendants in the Gulf, and Frere Town descendants in Kenya are denied visibility. Silence creates hierarchies of suffering and erodes solidarity across African and diasporic communities. Reparations must be inclusive, differentiated, and rooted in lived experiences, from the plantation economies of the Atlantic to the assimilation systems of the Indian Ocean and the caravan routes of the Sahara.

We love the acknowledgement. Now we call for action!
