KENYA: America backs Ruto - process Kenya’s minerals here, don’t ship them out

The U.S. has publicly sided with President William Ruto: Kenya should stop exporting raw minerals and start turning them into finished products at home.

Frank Garcia, Washington’s top diplomat for Africa, said it plainly in Nairobi today.

“American companies are not here to extract and ship. That is not partnership, that is extraction. We want processing done right here on the ground in Kenya, not thousands of miles away.”

Ruto welcomed that. His line has not changed. Kenya will no longer sell the raw stuff and watch other countries keep the factories and the jobs.

What this is actually about

For about 100 years, an Indian company, Tata Chemicals, has mined a mineral called soda ash from Lake Magadi in Kajiado. Soda ash is used to make glass, soap, chemicals and battery materials.

Kenya produced a lot of it. Most of it left the country unprocessed. Ruto’s argument is simple: Kenya kept the hole in the ground. Someone else kept the value.

Last week he told Tata to pack up and leave. He wants whoever comes next to build glass and chemical plants in Kajiado, not another export operation.

Tata says it has followed the law and will fight the dispute through official channels. The mines ministry had already suspended its operations in July.

The bigger picture

This is not only about one lake.

Kenya also wants the same rule for rare earths and other critical minerals, including a huge deposit at Mrima Hill in Kwale. The U.S. is interested. So is China. Garcia said critical minerals are a priority for President Trump, and America is ready to work with Kenya if the processing stays here.

What to watch

Tata may not be gone tomorrow. The legal fight is still open. People around Magadi also depend on the company for water and services, so a messy exit would hurt locals first.

But the political message is already out: Kenya wants factories, not just trucks to the port. And today, the United States said it agrees.

A school principal in Nepal saved 1,643 children just minutes before a powerful flood destroyed their school.

His name is Rajendra Dawadi.

On the morning of August 26, Rajendra received a warning that a huge flood was moving quickly toward the Trishuli Valley.

At first, he thought the school was high enough to stay safe.

But then another warning came.

The water was rising quickly.

Rajendra did not wait.

He immediately rang the school bell and told everyone to leave the building.

About 900 children were already at school, while hundreds more were still arriving by bus or walking.

Rajendra quickly contacted the bus drivers and told them to turn back.

Teachers and students then rushed to higher ground.

Just minutes later, the flood hit.

The school was badly damaged and swept away by the floodwaters.

But the most important thing happened:

Every one of the 1,643 students survived.

One warning.

One quick decision.
