Eloto (Turkana Bride Price Negotiation Ceremony)

Eloto is a traditional ceremony among the Turkana people of Kenya that marks the formal visit of the groom to the bride’s parents to negotiate the bride price. This visit usually takes place before the traditional wedding and symbolizes respect, commitment, and the uniting of two families.

During Eloto, the groom is accompanied by his uncles and respected elder men from his community. These elders play a key role in the negotiation process, drawing on their experience and wisdom to agree on the number of livestock—typically cattle, goats, or camels—to be given as bride price.

The discussions are conducted with diplomacy, patience, and mutual respect, reflecting the Turkana’s strong value of community and kinship. Once an agreement is reached, it paves the way for the next stages of marriage rituals and celebrations.
