Project “GOLD” Athletes Against Crime
As cliché as it sounds, our youths are our future and one that every day looks bleaker due to the vast spike in crime across the island. The headline in the Jamaica Gleaner dated January 21, 2018[1], “Young & Dangerous - Teenage Gangsters Driving Up The Crime Rate”, came as no surprise to many as our young people, mainly our young men, are constantly being recruited, coerced or forced into a life of crime and violence. This is not a problem we can wish away or sit around and point fingers on who should fix it, every citizen must do what we can to encourage, mould and shape these youngsters from a very young age to believe in themselves and foster social skills so they can develop a sense of achievement and shun a life of crime, violence, early pregnancy, drugs and gangs.
As an athlete from a community that is often in the news for activities related to crime violence, my successes came not only from my talents but through structured programs at school and outside of the community that introduced me to persons who were beside me, refining my talents and pushing me to ensure that every step of my Journey brought me closer to my “GOLD”. Project GOLD (Guidance, Opportunities and Lessons for Development) is therefore and initiative underpinned by sporting techniques for athletes to shoulder some responsibility to our youths, providing them with hope, inspiration and more importantly positive role models.
