Wow what an incredible energy and atmosphere at our IoD Jersey Debate last night! Our panel together with our wonderful host, Natasha Kaplynsky and IoD Jersey's superwoman, Alex Ruddy were incredible.

Insightful and challenging discussions certainly were raised and as a business community, IoD community and as a resident within the Island, we now have to put the work in to adopt the change which is so clearly needed.

So proud of our committee for putting this Debate back in the calendar and grateful to everyone who came and supported the event!

😱 Networking Dread.....It's a thing!

Welcome to the wonderful world of how you begin to understand networking and how you can be perceived from the onlooker and observer.

There are simple strategies that we will be covering over the next few days which you may not be aware of, which I found fascinating. Networking was something I began to learn, ironically enough from my ex-husband and soon I realised it was patterned behaviour and certain strategies had to be adhered to for it to became a lot easier.

Always remember you are the face and personality of your business and you will be assessed in a matter of seconds. The way you stand, your ability to maintain eye contact to the standard of your handshake and finally mastering the small talk....we will be covering it all!

Us British are quite a reserved bunch when it comes to networking, but obtaining a fresh, relaxed approach is very often a welcome change. Be yourself but be sure to listen, as a Brit or not, everyone likes to talk about themselves and what they are achieving in their own empire. Give them time and attention, new people remember experiences rather than written blurb – the atmosphere of the room, interesting people they have met and most of all, how the event made them feel, so let's start with 👇

🤯 Understanding the Room – open or closed positioning in groups of people at an event.

Next time you are scanning the room at a networking event, look for the “openings” - a two-person opening is a good start and doesn't seem so daunting. Approach with an open, confident posture with a gentle, warm expression....smiles go a long way in networking. Don't compete, just enjoy the opportunity to meet new people who could possibly open up doors to your business and more.

Understanding “closed” positioning is also important as it’s a clear indication that they don’t want to be interrupted and quite frankly could be so in depth with their conversation that they are oblivious to approaching new comers...get to know your obvious introductions and take the step forward as most people feel the same, slightly anxious.

Humans are pretty obvious with positive/negative facial expressions and body language, so if the first approach doesn't feel comfortable or right, move on - don't take it personally, you are at the event for business not making your new best friend.

Nothing makes an event manager happier than to see the Networking Drinks prior to the main event going down a storm with so much chat and laughter, so get yourself out there and ENJOY yourself!! 🥂
