While I was traveling in Naha, Okinawa last summer, I came across a Shinto Shrine near the ruins of Iso Castle. As I passed through the gate (torii), I noticed a black cat sitting in the middle of the shrine, as if waiting for me. I bowed to the cat as if it was the Kami itself, and tried to leave a few coins, but the cat scampered away when I did this. Did I encounter a Kami, or was it one of the many stray cats of Naha?
